“Whaletastic!”

First Chance Whale Watch
Reviewed 29 September 2013

We turned up for this Saturday's tour. We were staying nearby at Hidden Ponds so were really keen to get on the whale trip which runs less frequency at end of season.

However, I think that was to our favour! Firstly the boat had about 40 people on it so we could sit anyway and there was lots of room to move around either by sitting inside by the little area they serve coffee, drinks and snacks from or outer deck.

We had done our homework for being prepared so had taken seasick tablets beforehand and came prepared with warm windbreakers, camera and sun block. It was mainly calm and 73 degrees when we left port. However, as we got further out as expect with the wind and speed we were soon wrapped up head to toe and enjoying sitting at the front of the boat. I avoided the back as I didn't want the major rocking part!

The crew were fantastic - they were interactive (let's say there were some "whale" noises), friendly and the captain worked incredibly hard to find whales. We were lucky we saw whales, more whales, and then on route back another whale! We had to go pretty far out to get the sightings but it was amazing to witness. Our journey took around 5 hours so for the 45 bucks they charge this is pretty good value when you take into account time, fuel, boat, crew etc.

Great trip, well recommended!

Exceptional Crew - Large Seal Colony- Captain was great about getting us as close as possible. We then following a HUGE Dolphin pod- again the captain was great at getting everyone on the boat a good angle for pictures. Very informative without overkill. My niece is autistic and rarely interacts with people she does not know - The Captain was absolutely great with her - when she requested to see a Shark - he explained to her where we might see them and he even got on the radio with some of his fishing buddies to see if they had seen anything. A free passes for another trip since we didn't see any whales - Captain even kept us out a little longer trying to find whales :)

By definition whale watching is good if you see things, not much if you don't. First time out we saw nothing, but they gave us free passes for another trip, no expiration date. Next time out was great. Saw Finn Backs, Minkes, dolphins, seals, an 8' Swordfish, and a 30' Basking Shark. Awesome finds. Vessel and crew both great. First come for tickets. Toilet and sodas available. Worth a 1/2 day while in Kennebunkport. Enjoy.

This trip was 4 glorious hours on the water with 3 whale sightings, 1 breach near the boat, and a tour of the lighthouse island with a large seal population. The captain explained that the whales we saw were minke whales, which are smaller than other whales. He was very knowledgeable about the environment and really made this an enjoyable tour as well as educational. Couldn't have been better-a sunny day with no wind and calm seas. Well worth the time and money.
