“May be pet friendly - but at a price.”
Reviewed 21 December 2013

We arrived at the Inn with our Havanese Paco - there was a dog cookie waiting with his name on it and dog bowls at the ready. The room, however, compared unfavorably with those of the previous two Inns where we had stayed prior to our arrival at the Jefferds. The decor was dated and tired. The bed needs replacing and the bathroom is cramped.

We were asked about dietary restrictions when we reserved the room. I have celiac disease so cannot eat glutin. The glutin- free breakfast was disappointing - it was glutin free but only in as much as the glutin was eliminated from the breakfast served other guests with the addition of a commercial glutin free muffin.

The room was very expensive perhaps setting up higher expectations.

Room Tip: Our room was not in the main house - it had its own entrance. Rooms in the main house must be better...

Susannegt, thank you for taking the time to write about your experience at the Captain Jefferds Inn. We are very sorry that your stay was not to your liking. The Baxter room, where you stayed does have a small bathroom, and was purposefully redecorated in a Maine “camp” style which includes a custom made bed, and hand painted mural. I have shared your review with the staff and we have made a plan to address your other concerns with the accommodations for future guests.

We've always believed that we were successfully meeting the special dietary requirements of our guests, which as you experienced begins with the identifying those with special requirements at reservation. We serve homemade gluten-free muffins at breakfast as well as specialty teas, coffees and desserts throughout the day. Because of your breakfast experience, we are reviewing how to best communicate the appropriate expectation when accommodating special diets.

We hope you return to our Inn and give us the opportunity to exceed your expectations. As you had probably read from our past reviews, your experience is not indicative of what we usually achieve and would be appreciative to be given that second chance.

When we pulled up to the inn, both my husband and I are were in awe of the beauty! That awe continued as we walked in the front door, Steve cordially greeted us while giving us a quick tour of the downstairs before showing us our room. We were in the Assisi room which is on the third floor. Gorgeous bathroom, great king size bed, fluffy thick towels and linens. The breakfast is amazing. You will not be disappointed with your stay!

Room Tip: All rooms are equally tasteful and elegant.

dream530 hi! Thanks for the glowing remarks and wonderful review. Steve is a integral part of the experience here at the Captain Jefferds and as you experienced, at the ready to assist. The front entrance with its turned staircase and Grandfather clock nestled in the round is always a great wow for our visitors.

We hope that you find the time to return to us again soon.

Cheers!

ken02driver hi! Thanks for returning to Maine and choosing the Captain Jefferds out of all the possibilities in Kennebunkport. While we generally enjoy the company of our guests for 2 nights or more, we are happy to have been able to accommodate your brief stay. Please return soon and stay a while longer. As you know we're only a short trip from Boston which makes us the perfect getaway for a weekend of romance, fun and relaxation.

Cheers

My wife and I stayed at the Capt Jefferds Inn last April for the first time. It was a 3-night stay and we spent one night in the Camden Room and the next two nights in the Monticello Room. Both rooms were very nice, immaculately clean and the entire inn was a joy. The breakfasts were wonderful and well-prepared each day. The inn is a 5-minute walk to Dock Sq, so there is no need to move your car from the (free) parking lot unless you want to see the area (which I highly recommend).

We had such a great time in April, that we decided to return to the Capt Jefferds Inn in Nov with another couple. My wife and I stayed in the Monticello Room again and it was like returning home. The chilly Nov air made it easy to justify turning on the in-room gas fireplace which added further to the comfort and ambiance of our room. All rooms, by the way, also have cable TV, free wireless, plush bathrobes and high-end toiletries. In addition to the great breakfast, the Inn makes delicious cookies each afternoon that can be washed down with coffee, tea, soft drinks, etc..

Summers and holiday weekends, including the two weeks before Christmas, are extremely busy in and around Kennebunkport, but my wife and I look forward to our next visit to the Capt, Jefferds this coming Spring.

Room Tip: The Capt Jefferds Inn has a very good website with at least one picture of each room along with each...

Steve hi! Thank you for the high praise and high marks again. We're very happy that you have chosen to be a frequent guest. The gas fireplaces are new this year as it was time to change the experience of using the fireplaces in the rooms. Every room now has the warmth and ambiance of fire on demand which can be accessed all year round because even as Mark Twain had found out, parts of the summers can be chilly as well.

So very happy you enjoyed yourself and introduced us to friends this time. Maine restaurant week is March 1st this year and Kennebunk and Portland is foodie central. Perhaps we'll see you then?

Cheers!

That is how I would describe each and every visit to Captain Jefferds Inn. I've been there with my husband several times over the years, and we've introduced friends to CJI who also have gone back. Just recently, however, I was at Captain Jefferds Inn for a weekend get-away with my four sisters. Some of us had been there before, some had not ... and for those who had not been before, they agreed that would not be their last visit. Sarah and Erik are friendly, warm and welcoming. The Inn is immaculate. I've stayed in many of the differently decorated rooms, all are great. The breakfasts are to-die-for good. We enjoy sitting and talking with the other guests before heading out for the day. Later on the in the afternoon, it is fun to return to the "sun room" for tea, coffee, hot apple cider and homemade cookies ... and find out how everyone's day went. The Inn is located just a short (convenient) walk to the downtown area. We did a little shopping, had some great light bite dinner within walking distance, and even spent one afternoon at a spa just down the road (yes, we did walk in spite of some pretty brisk winds!) I have been to Captain Jefferds all four seasons now, and I honestly think each and every one has its own charm. This most recent visit, we met people who have been driving up from Virginia every year for the last 15 years ... what does that tell you?! I think it speaks volumes. :D

Room Tip: I have stayed in many of the different rooms and have been pleased with each and every one. While I...

Nancy G thank you for the kind words, excellent ratings and helpful tips that you leave for guests considering a stay with us. As you mentioned we are pet friendly as many of our guests love bringing their four legged family along. It's an even better discovery when they realize how pet-friendly our little hamlet is. Dogs are welcomed on the beach, in specially created dog parks, in many stores (and a few restaurants), fussed over at the drive-ups with cookies and supplied water bowls and snacks at a few of the cafes. Here at the inn we are happy to supply : dog bowls, towels, sheets, pick-up bags, and a personalized dog treat.

Thank you for continuing to stay with us and introduce us to new friends and family. Everyone was very busy yesterday and today putting up the Christmas decorations and we've got a whole different look! The only thing needed now is a blanket of snow to complete the transition from fall and add a bit of ambiance for one of the five tree lighting ceremonies we have each year.

Cheers!

Emerson_MM Thank you for taking the time to write a review and sharing your feelings. We all fuss over the condition of the Inn and are happy read the hard work rewarded by your comments. The sun room is a favorite spot in the house as it is open, spacious and yet private. Together with the patio outside the terrace room it is a nice spot to enjoy the sounds of the birds, a cool breeze, the warmth of the sun or unwind in the evening hours.

I hope you choose to return to us soon for another getaway.

Cheers
