“Best Autumn Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 October 2012

The Nonantum Inn was the final and best night of our tour to New England on a Caravan tour on Oct.7th. Gracious hosts greeted us with cider and freshly baked cookies. We were given the key to our room (352) and after a quick tour of the beautiful seasonally decorated grounds, we made our way up in time to view a picturesque sunset over the river as a young couple exchanged their vows on the green below by the lighthouse. A delicious lobster feast was enjoyed by all as the staff in the restaurant took time to teach us just how to crack and obtain the luscious meat. The next morning, we had a delicious extensive buffet which included everything imaginable in addition to apple walnut pancakes and belgian waffles topped with maple syrup or strawberries and whipped cream. Our room was huge with a pot bellied stove in the corner ready for use and the most comfortable bedding I've ever slept in anywhere. Definitely a 5 star resort!

Room Tip: Higher floors would probably be a good choice since this is an old inn and the floors can be noisy...

Hello Julie:
You were so kind to send such a lovely report about your stay! It has been a spectacular fall here in Kennebunkport and it has been our pleasure to watch many beautiful weddings happen right here on our grounds. Our own lighhouse is the perfect backdrop as the place to say "I do"!
The nights are getting cooler and our rooms with gas stoves are super popular with good reason - who doesn't love to cozy in after a brisk autumn walk downtown and a yummy lobster dinner?
Enjoy this special time of year!
Warm Regards,
Jean Ginn Marvin

I posted a review last year at this time indicating how disappointed we were with our room in the Carriage House building. At that time, the room was very worn looking and in need of many updates. The hotel manager let us know they had plans to renovate our room and invited us to return. She reserved the same room (#307) for us because she wanted us to see the difference and she knew we would love it - and we did! We could not believe how lovely the room is compared to how it looked last year. The entire room was updated - new wood floors, wainscoting, new furniture, new comforter, new shower curtain, new bathroom sink and hardware, new paint (no peeling wallpaper!), new TV...it was absolutely beautiful and felt so clean! We were so amazed to learn that a group of middle school students helped to design the room - we were so impressed! The room isn't large but it felt much bigger since they eliminated extra furniture, added seating and mounted the TV on the wall. They also finished the closet and included a luggage rack which helps with storage. The outside of the hotel is gorgeous and beautifully decorated for the season...exactly how you would imagine New England in the Fall. The Nonantum is a beautiful hotel with friendly staff and in a perfect location. We would highly recommend staying here (be sure to request an updated room).

Thank you for taking the time to write a new review! With a 129 year old property with over 100 sleeping rooms we are in a constant state of improvement! As you noted, you stayed in the room just weeks before it was slated for renovation. The Growing Up Green in Kennebunkport program was started by our General Manager Tina Hewett-Gordon in partnership with the local Middle School when Tina's daughter Kyleigh was a student at The Middle School of the Kennebunks. The program has gone on to win numerous awards! We have several guests who ask each time to stay in a room the kids have decorated! They are all different and all fantastic!
Maybe in your next visit you can check out another one of their rooms!
Thanks again for the great follow up!

We were blown away with Nonatum for a number of reasons. When we arrived, there were three bus tours either there or checking in...gulp!! But I was amazed how the staff was able to handle them separately and not slow down couples like us from checking in, getting up the elevator, dining, etc.

The roomy was unbelievable (room 426). We had a great view overlooking the river. It was very clean. There were 4 windows, so it was very light and airy in the room.

But I can't say enough about the staff. We came downstairs for breakfast (included with the room) and there were over 100 of the bus-people in this one room. We were escorted to a quieter room.

They managed to take care of both their large group business and individual business and do so effortlessly. Quite a feat. We will return to this lovely property.

We will look forward to seeing you back here again soon! As you so correctly point out, the Nonantum is uniquely set up for large groups yet if you and your spouse want a quiet getaway, we can easily accommodate that as well. Motor coaches in the fall full of happy leaf peepers are prevalent and an important part of our areas economy! I feel we have really perfected balancing the needs of our individual guests with those of our guests who are taking a tour. The end result has been many people get to enjoy beautiful New England in the Fall! (secretly my favorite season of the year!
Thanks for your spectacular review!

This hotel was the final stop on our eight day bus tour of New England. Unfortunately, it was pouring rain so I wasn't able to explore the grounds. What I did see, though, was lovely.

We only experienced two problems....our room was in the annex and to get to the dining room for our tour's lobster dinner, we had to walk outside in the heavy rain. It was a bit slippery and inconvenient for my 90 year old mother. Also, there were no blankets on the bed....just a sheet and the bedspread. The blankets were in the closet so we put them on the bed. We thought it strange that they were not already on the bed.

Got locked out of the room and received prompt and courteous service to get back in!

It is a lovely hotel....just what I expected in New England.

I am so delighted to hear you had such a wonderful stay at The Nonantum! I wish we could have gotten you a little better weather as the ground really are lovely!
I am sorry your mom had a hard time walking between buildings. As someone with elderly parents myself, I can appreciate how challenging seemingly small tasks can be. We can always send a bellman with a wheel chair for pick up service so hopefully you and your mom will make it back here someday soon and we can do just that!
Have a lovely fall!

Spent 3 days last week with friends from LA. Found the front desk staff very helpful, the wait staff in the dining room excellent, the rooms clean and modern and welcoming. Not a bad price for the area, and a lovely back lawn. We got the "lobster alive" package and really enjoyed Captain Bob and Kevin. Highly recommend.

Hello Marsha!
I am delighted to learn that you enjoyed our Lobster's Alive package! It was Featured in Travel and Leisure and as a result we have had many visitors sign up for that package! I mean, how can you come to Maine and not partake of those yummy crustaceans?
Captain Bob and First Mate Kevin, as well as all the Crew on the Rugosa offer such a fun boat ride. The fact that it leaves right from our own marina makes it especially popular among our guests. Having a chance to tour the town from the water is a special treat and Captain Bob always has some fun stories to share!
Thanks for writing!

We were on a 13 night tour of New England and stayed someplace different every night! This hotel was one of our favorites! The beds are comfortable. The service friendly. Great views! A wonderful fairy garden (didn't even know of such a thing!) and a nicely decorated hotel! The elevator is an original Otis elevator and an employee is required to run it which they do not mind doing anytime you need to go to or from your room. There is not much space in the bathroom for toiletries so travel light in that department.

Room Tip: Ask for one facing the water!

After a long couple week of touring I surely appreciate that you took the time to send this nice review our way! Many folks are quite fascinated by our Fairy Garden. Legend has it that the Fairy's come at night and leave trinkets for good little boys and girls! Children in Maine build them all the time and they are really fun imaginative play. Clearly our Gardeners have lots of fun when deciding how to decorate around here as well! This fall a big hit has been the huge pumpkin next to the walk. People have been guessing the weight and winning prizes. Always a highlight of the fall!
Thanks again for the terrific review!

There are several buildings in this property and our room was in what we assume was the original block, in fact it must have been two rooms originally. Once we were settled in I realised that we were right above reception and next to the stairwell and wondered if noise was going to be a problem, but as we were only booked in for one night we were happy to stay where we were. As it turned out, we need not have worried, the only thing that disturbed our sleep was that the bed was a bit too soft and springy for our liking. The room was nicely decorated, a bit twee for me but my wife liked it.
We ate there and although we ate well we thought it was a bit expensive for what was provided, especially breakfast, but if you factor in the view from the restaurant it was probably not too bad.
All the staff we encountered were cheerful and helpful.

It is wonderful you enjoyed your all too brief stay at The Nonantum Resort! You are correct, there are several rooms that at one time were two rooms. When the hotel was built in the 1880's, there were no bathrooms or closets, so when it was retrofitted to include baths and closets, some of the rooms were quite small. Recently we have renovated yet again (actually we are basically in a constant state of renovation!) and taken the smaller rooms and turned them in to small suites and that is the room type you were in.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts,
