“In love with the Herbert Grand!”
Reviewed 11 May 2011

An affordable historic hotel just 15 miles from Sugarloaf USA, the Herbert Grand is a very cozy way to rest up before for your day of skiing and riding on the mountain. Ms. Dawn, the proprietor's mother is wonderful and welcoming. She she's often on staff to greet and check in guests. The hotel has a roomy yet cozy lobby with a well lit fire during the winter months where guests can sit and have a drink. The hotel also has serves a limited selection of bottled beers. The rooms are quaint and cozy with jacuzzi tubs in most rooms. A continental breakfast (bagels, cream cheese, oatmeal, juice, coffee, and whole fruit) is served in the mornings which is excellent for skiers and riders. My favorite part of the hotel by far is the an antique feel and the old inside telephone booths the owner has converted into a kind of art installation pieces containing memorabilia.

We stayed at the Herbert as a last minute overnight trip to the mountain for skiing & riding. The Herbert is only a short 15 minute straight shot to Sugarloaf making it quite convenient if your not staying mountain side. Dawn was extremely helpful with our arrangements and getting us the best possible deal/rate.

Although the Herbert is outdated (renovations/updates are moving forward), it has a charm that can not be replaced by today's standards. They just don't build them like this anymore.

The staff is friendly and the complementary breakfast has fresh home made breads which we just loved! We will stay again on our next trek north and can not wait to see how the new owners progress with renovations. This is a family owned hotel, not a chain so these things take time.

I can honestly stay that Kingfield and The Herbert exceeded my expectations. Described by Ski Magazine as "The most beautifully preserved ski town east of Aspen," Kingfield is a gem. The Herbert, with its helpful staff, clean, comfortable accommodations and friendly, helpful staff provided the perfect opportunity to enjoy Sugarloaf on the cheap, while sacrificing nothing in the way of comfort and quality. My wife and I will definitely be back.

This hotel is fantastic, it is full of original features like old telephones and phone booths, antiques and beautiful woodwork and large original 6 over 6 windows. The lobby has a grand fireplace. It is really amazing to see. Our room was the 'family room' as we were two adults and two kids, the kids had separate beds- a plus. It was really two rooms and one bath. The king sized bed in our room was the most comfortable bed I have slept on in a long time. Honestly, it was a memory foam pillow top I think. And the pillows were not hard and overstuffed. The new owners are really making some great changes to return this hotel to its splendor. The beds and bedding are all new as are the comfy couches in the lobby. There is an arcade room- great for kids, and drinks available after a day of skiing. The kids loved the chips and mints in the lobby and we all found something yummy at the continental breakfast, including homemade quick breads. A vending machine has very affordable snacks a plus when you are heading to Sugarloaf. They have plans to replace old carpeting which will be interesting to see. Our bathroom was a bit outdated yet sparkling clean. We assumed since it was an old hotel it would be noisy though it was very quiet. There is a restaurant right across the street for dinner. The woman running the hotel is very nice and friendly and hard working. We look forward to returning.
