“Love the Island Inn”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 August 2014

We have had many wonderful experiences at the Island Inn. A trip to beautiful Monhegan would not feel complete without at least a night here. From the friendly staff to the delicious breakfasts, it never disappoints. It is not cheap, and be aware that some of the rooms are pretty tiny -- but the feat of running an establishment as nice as this on a place like Monhegan (scarce natural resources and electricity, etc.) can't be underestimated. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: The Pierce Cottage rooms work well for families and are larger.

The Island Inn sits on the brow of the hill that leads down to the dock and it sits serenely overlooking the harbor. We spent a lot of time sitting in the Adirondack chairs watching the dock activity and reading. The rooms are simple New England style with white curtains blowing in the sea breeze, and down comforters to ward off chills. The restaurant we found to be excellent. They know how to cook sea food, which we found to be fresh and delicious. We had huge lobsters cooked in sea water, scallops, salmon, mussels and clam chowder and all were wonderful. The staff is energetic and cheerful and it was a pleasure to be there. The Inn is apparently under new management, but as it was our first visit, I could not make any comparisons, but we were very pleased with every aspect of our visit.

Room Tip: Water view side is best

It is hard to put into words the beauty, uniqueness, and splendor of Monhegan Island. For my wife and I, Monhegan was a place unlike we had ever been before. You will not find exciting nightlife or chain restaurants here. But if you're looking for the absolute perfect place to unwind, disconnect from the world, and BREATHE, look no further than Monhegan Island. Our two nights on Monhegan would not have been as wonderful had it not been for the Island Inn.

We arrived around noon on a Monday, and the Island Inn truck (one of about three vehicles on this entire island) transported our luggage to the inn. After walking from the wharf to the front desk of the Inn, I was fully expecting to not be able to check in and I wanted to make sure that our luggage would be looked after until we were able to check in. Imagine our extreme delight when the lady who was at the front desk told me that our room was ready and we were able to check in early! And not only had our luggage been brought to the inn, it was taken directly to our room, which I thought was an extremely wonderful touch.

Perhaps I wasn't paying attention when I booked the room on the website, but when we checked into our room, we were immediately floored. The room, a corner room on the 2nd floor with a private deck, was perfect. As is the case with older hotels, the room and the bathroom are small...but more than adequate for us. We immediately opened up the windows and opened up the door to our deck which created a beautiful cross-breeze in our room. My wife and I were both stunned by the level of cleanliness in this old beautiful inn.

And then there was THE VIEW. Sure, Monhegan Island is not a place where you go to stay inside. But we could have sat on the adirondack chairs on our deck overlooking the perfect little harbor and Manana Island for the full two days we were there and been completely satisfied. Falling asleep to crashing surf is something I dream about often. We were able to fall asleep and wake up to the sounds of the ocean and it was pure bliss. We had perfect weather while we were on the island (full sun and temperatures in the 70s) which allowed us to watch two INCREDIBLE sunsets. The biggest struggle we had while here was whether we would watch the sunset from our private deck or go down to the rocking chairs on the gorgeous veranda.

Breakfast is included in your room rate, and it was absolutely delicious. Yes, it is a buffet style breakfast, but it is high quality and FRESH. If you would like pancakes or eggs custom made for you, you're able to order them if you so choose.

Dinner is not included in your room rate, but we chose to eat dinner at the inn both nights we were on the island. Again, the food was exquisite and the service was top-notch. The restaurant is not cheap for dinner, but it is definitely worth every penny. Right down to the unbelievably DELICIOUS homemade blueberry pie that you should definitely order for dessert!!

Monhegan Island stole my heart. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Having The Island Inn as our base on Monhegan was - in my opinion - the only choice. There are no TVs at the Island Inn, but they do have free wifi; however, I found it to be spotty and limited. But if you're coming to Monhegan Island, chances are you are coming to disconnect from the world...and for me...having unreliable internet made the trip even better because I wasn't tempted to use it and instead sat outside or read or just plain relaxed. From the food, to the service, to playing Scrabble on the game table in the front room, it was two days I will never forget.

I can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: I am not sure if there is a better room in the inn than Room 33. A corner room with a private deck a...

Timeless old school lodge style hotel updated to current standards in a stunningly beautiful, uniquely peaceful place. The absence of TV and phones is wonderful. If one needs contact the hotel has a main phone and internet wi fi. Last night after a beautiful walk we sat on the porch, watched the sunset and read while listening to someone play guitar.

Room Tip: Top floor will avoid listening to people on the wood floor above.

Monhegan is a place for respite, wonder and outdoor delight and we could not have had a better base than the Island Inn. The Inn had lovely touches -- a shared guest refrigerator for storing picnic items -- including the Growler from the Monhegan Brewing Company, a crazily delightful find after a few hours of hiking -- and 6:45 coffee provided, making an early morning sit on their exceptional porch a fabulous way to start the day. Breakfast was excellent and included in the price of the room. While dinner at the inn looked fantastic, it also was on the big/rich side, and we opted instead to enjoy the fun and low key food available at the fish shack. On our second evening we got fish tacos from Hot Fat and brought them back to the lawn of the inn and ate while watching the sun set. (If you're bringing younger children, consider Tracey Kane's book Fairy House and the film Kristin's Fairy House as an intro to Monhegan - but remember, fairy houses should only have natural materials that are not living - we were disappointed to find some embellishments that are not good for the woods) The rooms themselves are small and somewhat rustic, but it is not a place to stay indoors, and everything was very clean and well cared for. Picnic supplies can be found on the island, but we were also glad to have brought our own for lunches by the ocean.

Room Tip: We chose a corner room for more ventilation but the big choice is between a shared bath or private o...

Many people who visit Monhegan rent cottages by the week as opposed to staying at the Inn but schedule a dinner out. Eight of us "rusticators" did exactly that the other night and enjoyed a wonderful meal of transcendently fresh fish, mussels in white wine sauce, super scallops, and chowders. Beautifully prepared to perfection every dish and improved over other years.
However, in addition to the fishy entrees whoever is in the kitchen respects and honors vegetables! Grilled fennel brings out its innate sweetness; the salads are inventive (even the iceberg wedge, a popular old timer, with great toppings). Finally, no meal at the Inn is complete without the desserts, chief among which is the traditional blueberry pie ( our companions have been known to reserve a piece at the beginning of the meal), but the flour less chocolate ganache with hazelnuts, strawberries, and suchlag or ice cream runs a close second.
Monhegan laws allow for people to bring their own wine or beer to restaurants
( a great variety may be purchased at the Barnicle on the dock, L Brackett & son, or the Monhegan Brewery on the road to Lobster Cove. The restaurant will uncork your wine and bring glasses with no fanfare or corkage fees.
If you go to Monhegan overnight do include the restaurant in your plans!

I wouldn't stay anywhere else. First of all, you are staying in one of the world's great art icons. The Island Inn must be the most depicted hotel in more paintings than any other.
The hotel is New England . The rooms are spare, clean, updated baths, and beautiful. Walls are thin, floors are creaky in this old building.
Pay for an upgraded sea view and a large room if possible. The cheaper rooms are fine, but small. Remember that in the 'shoulder' seasons the rooms are unheated. Ask the wonderful and obliging staff for an extra blanket.
The restaurant is very good.
Also be aware that the Island Inn and all of the Monhegan services have to work very hard on this distant island. Typically islanders have several jobs. Costs of food, drink and so on, are high due to transportation that can be variable. The Island has essentially a three to four month season. This is when people can make their livings.
If you are so moved, tip generously. Monhegan is an extraordinary place and it needs our help.

Room Tip: Pay for an upgraded sea view and a large room if possible. The cheaper rooms are fine, but small. R...
