“Great place to kick back and relax”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 October 2010

We stayed in one of the ocean view rooms. The room was comfortable and clean, with a warm and comfy down comforter. We had a corner room, so had two different views that were both beautiful. We ate dinner at the Inn. It was pricey, but delicious. You must understand that everything is brought in by boat, so things are more expensive. For those of you that like wine with dinner, be prepared to bring it or buy it in the small store on the island and the wait staff will serve it. After dinner, we relaxed in the library by the fireplace. It was fun to talk with other people staying at the Inn. There is no central heat, so be prepared to cuddle when you go to bed! :) A full breakfast is included and was good, too. It is served buffet style, with additional eggs and pancakes made to order. Hiking and art galleries are close by and well worth your time.

This is the most expensive place we stayed during our trip to Maine, with the most modest room, but it was still entirely worth it.

Monhegan Island is about an hour's boat ride away from the coast. We chose to depart from Port Clyde. (There is a lighthouse nearby the docks which we decided to visit -- so glad we did!) We had made reservations for the boat trip in advance, so we parked and picked up our tickets inside the small gift shop. At the boat, we were greeted by the captain and his dog. The captain kindly suggested that if you think you'll get seasick, it's better to sit outside up top. We're not sure if it was the dramamine we'd taken or the seats up top, but either way we did not feel seasick at all. It was great to sit up top and absorb the view from the mainland to the island -- gray, foggy, misty. We kept out eyes out for puffins, whales and seals, but no luck this time. When we arrived at the tiny dock at Monhegan, there were townsfolk to welcome us and trucks ready to pick up supplies.

The Island Inn is only a short walk up the hill from the dock. What a picturesque place! We stayed in an ocean view room with a shared bath. The room was small but adequate. The shared bath was not a problem at all; we never had to wait and we never ran into other guests. There is a sink inside the bedroom which limited the need for the shared bathroom.

The food at the Inn is excellent. We made a reservation for dinner which was candlelit and romantic. There were quite a few guests at the Inn so definitely more of an inn feel than a B&B. The porch was a great spot to sit on a white rocking chair, read and watch the ocean and birds. There are lawn chairs, too, if you want to get closer to the water and out from under the porch awning. Inside, the common room had a fireplace, and there was also a small study. Just across from the Inn is a small bodega called the Barnacle where you could buy wine (dinner is BYOB) and sandwiches and other amenities. The next day, the breakfast buffet (included in the price of the room) was plentiful with lobster scrambled eggs, blueberry muffins, pancakes, roasted potatoes, juice, bagels, cereals, fruit, pastries, toast, and if that's not enough, you could even order from a menu! During the day, we visited the island's galleries and small shops before meeting our boat that afternoon to head back to the mainland. This ride was much calmer and sunnier.

During the trip, we heard the someone comment, "If you have to ask 'What do you do on Monhegan Island?,' then you probably shouldn't go." Very true. Monhegan is a place to totally relax, not have an itinerary, and just go with the flow... rest, read, visit the local artists, and hike.

What a gorgeous experience to stay all night on Monhegan Island in this beautiful old hotel. It had lots of charm. The room with the balcony overlooking to Manana Island was magical. The inn has no phone and tv (which was nice), but the island has so much to do that you are forced to relax (another good thing!). The dinner at the hotel (by reservation only) was so delicious and elegant, and the breakfast was the best one we had on our 2 week vacation in Maine (lobster and eggs!! and blueberry stuffed french toast). The greeting we got from the innkeepers was the best one as well. Stay here and enjoy!!

My friend and I spent one glorious day on Monhegan Island, and staying at the inn made that day even more perfect. Our room was spartan but clean and comfortable, with an incomparable view of the ocean and a nearby island. The staff were helpful and cheerful, the dinner in the inn's restaurant superb, and the breafast plentiful and delicious. The common areas of the inn (both inside and out) added to its appeal. All in all, this hotel rates very high on my lifetime list of favorite places.

This hotel is incredible. The view is beautiful and the food is really good. I think the art in this hotel is lovely and the feel of this hotel is really warm. I have had many stays at this hotel and spent some dreamy days with my daughter searching for fairy houses on some of the island trails- and starlit nights just outside our hotel door together on the decks or nearby trails.

This hotel is clean- it is unique- very old and stately. I have visited when they had weddings too and imagine it as a perfect romantic wedding venue- very unique. You have to visit to understand what I mean!

Through every window is a lovely view and the breeze kept us cool every time we stayed there which is always in August.
I recommend this hotel for anyone visiting the island- it is the first hotel you see by the dock and really the most beautiful building that stands out as your ferry approaches the island.

It costs a bit more but is worth every penny . Truly one of the most lovely hotels I have visited!

My husband and I went there July 2010. We loved the place. The hotel itself is so clean, crisp, beautiful. Renovations seemed to be really recent. The view from porch is so wonderful. The staff were so helpful. The meals were terrific.

You do not come to Monhegan Island for the usual touristy things like spas and great shopping and pools with cabanas. The island has no paved roads, but some 17 miles of trails that criss-cross the small island to take you to some of the most gorgeous, unspoiled and most-painted scenery on the East coast. Overnight visitors can have their bags transported to their Inn or B&B or hotel by one of the island pickup trucks. Most of the "attractions" like gift shops, cafes, and small grocery stores are within about a 1/4 mile walk from the pier. I recommend the Fish House for the most amazing lobster roll, and the friendliest, most enthusiastic service!!

We had a front/ocean view room w/private bath at the Island Inn. It was TINY, but we only were there to sleep and change clothes. The bathroom had a small shower stall, but overall the bathroom was big enough. Big windows open up to catch the ocean breeze! No phone, no TV, but we did have internet service at the hotel.

We only ate breakfast at the inn, and it was delicious!! Buffet style with additional items you could have cooked to order. The blueberry pancakes were very good, but the lobster scrambled eggs were out of this world!! These were the BEST eggs I have ever eaten...yum! Had to go back for seconds on those ;-)

Before check-in and after check-out you can use the inn's bathrooms to change your clothes if you wish, and they store your luggage for you. After hiking, we enjoyed sitting on the inn's front lawn in their Adirondack chairs sipping wine and watching the sun set. If you prefer not to sit outside, there are rocking chairs on the wide porch and several sitting rooms inside the hotel. A lot of people get take-out and eat their lunches or dinners/suppers on the lawn picnic-style. Very relaxed atmosphere and excellent service all-around at the inn.
