“Nice, Peaceful, Family Campground”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 August 2013

The four of us (2 adults & 2 children) camped with a very small pop-up (Coleman Colorado), a large tent (REI Hobitat 6) and an LL Bean screen room. There was plenty of room on the site and it was level with just enough slope to keep it dry in case it rained. Water and electric were conveniently located on our site (#42).

The campground was beautiful, with wooded sites, a quarry in the center, and shore access. The staff was pleasant and helpful. There was space to store our kayak near the water. The sites are small enough to restrict the campground to only accommodating small RVs, pop-ups, and tents, which is what attracted us. There is not a lot of room between sites and there are a lot of them packed into a relatively small area. This is what we have come to expect outside of the state or national park campgrounds. Fortunately, with the exception of one car alarm followed by uncontrollable giggling for more than a hour until near midnight, everyone was quiet and respected the campground's quiet hours. Early morning walks down to see the sound were rewarded with the beautiful sights and sounds of an active harbor and there are plenty of things to see and do nearby. Kayaking in the sound was very enjoyable although at low tide the boat ramp gets very steep.

The bathhouse was clean and there were conveniently located Port-o-pottys that were also kept very clean.

My one nitpick would be the extra charges. $5 per night for our tent, even though it did not change the occupancy numbers for our site, and tokens needed to shower - $1 for 5 minutes.

One incredible discovery was "The Common Good Cafe" a short drive away in Seawall, which served fresh hot homemade Popovers and Oatmeal along with coffee and juices every morning for the price of a donation (pay what you think it's worth). The money goes to a very good cause.

Beautiful small and quiet campsite with stunning views. Gorgeous area to relax on the jetty by the water. The staff were really friendly and helpful. Bathroom facilities large and clean but you do have to pay $1 for a shower.

This campground has beautiful views of the sound. We enjoyed waking up to boats floating by each morning. Bathrooms were big and clean! I would changes a few things. Having to by tokens for the shower was a bit strange. And the price of the shower was a little high, $1.00 for six minutes, but having a clean shower was worth the price. The dumpsters were overflowing for the four nights we were there. Campsites were clean and despite what they tell you, there are fire rings on each campsite so don't buy one to bring with you like we did. Lastly the set up of water and electric could be better situated on each campsite. We could not reach the water without a really long hose. All in all a nice place with some tweaks it would be perfect!

Room Tip: Do not bring your own campfire ring, they have them installed

No Sewell for RV, no control on late noises. They let travellers to show up at midnight and install them self. Radio music until midnight. Also 1 $ per shower (5 min.)

They sale wood for fire that are too green, not dry, impossible to light even with fire starter.....

It was a lovely campground. While it's crowded, it doesn't feel like you're on top of the people next to you. My boyfriend and I rented kayaks from the office (for a reasonable price), and it was an easy way to see the ocean without being surrounded by tourists. It's not too far from the park or Bar Harbor. Overall, a good time.

A decent family campground, but I feel the price was a bit high. Terraced and a bit hilly with most sites relatively flat with fine grit cinders covering each lot. We were tenting & it rained buckets all night & day. Our site drained well as did most it appeared. Small beach area and a few tiny cabins to choose from. The 1 bath house is OK, but can be overwhelmed when there are high vacancy's, but that's standard fair in most places now. If you're among the back-packing genre, this may not be your kind of place. This is not the "Wilderness" , it's more like parking lot camping for small trailers or pop-ups with minor privacy between sites. Would have liked to have seen a pavilion or some other sheltered structure to go to during our wet stay just to get out of the rain. Tough to get a decent cell signal if that is important to you.Otherwise it was ok & clean overall.

This was a bit of a last minute decision, therefore we didn't get much of a choice of sites. We ended up spending 6 nights (we added an additional night due to 2 days of rain). We stayed at site 45 with 2 small 2person tents a vehicle and small boat trailer. First the sites were much closer together than they appear on the map, and there is minimal privacy. The campground states that there is a 10:00PM-7:00AM quiet time that is STRICLY enforced. We had one neighbor that were quite loud multiple nights, until midnight or later - quiet time definately NOT enforced. Most campers respected each others privacy. The sites were clean, with water and electricity (which our daughters liked so they could charge their ipods/phones) - Wifi is free at office, but only open until 8pm. The bathhouse was relatively clean, (dirty mostly due to visitors who couldn't find the multiple trash cans). You have to pay for a hot shower $1.00 for 5 minutes. The heated pool was nice the sit by and relax after a day hiking or kayaking. We brought our own kayaks, but access parking is not available, so we had to drive our vehicle with kayak trailer down to water, unload and return it to our campsite. There is not a lot of room by the water and it was difficult to maneuver. They do offer a rack to store visitor kayaks on, but even the staff warn that visitors have confused Campground boats with visitor boats, and recommend locking them. The kayaking is lovely in the Sound, it's a great area to paddle - it's really one of only a couple accesses to the Sound for visitors (which we found out after we checked out). There was really no Public Access other than campgrounds.

Overall the campground is clean, provides water, electricity, ice, and firewood (though we got green wood - cheaper outside the campground). The young ladies at the desk were very nice, but I found that they lacked knowledge of the area, though they were very helpful when we needed to find a campsite for the extra night. Our current site was not available, and she went out of her way to secure us a different one for what ended up being our last 2 nights.

Now if you could only get rid of the crows in the early morning!! LOL :)

I would recommend this campground to anyone who has kids and that doesn't mind a close knit community of campers!
