Had lobster, cooked outside in boiling seawater in a special cook house by the sea. View of the water was tremendous. Service was prompt and the welcome we received was outstanding. The price was a bit high for what we got, but the food was great, presented well

We love when people enjoy our view, your are right, it is tremendous.

Seafood can be a bit pricey and it changes daily for us, we are happy to hear the view and service made up for the price.

Hope you had a great vacation.

Knowing that this restaurant was just opened for the season we decided to go to dinner. The view was incredible. _when we walked through the door we were greeted by a very inebriated lady...when I asked my server who this was she said the owner. We decided to leave and went into the town of Northeast Harbor for dinner...never again...

The one disappointing meal on Mount Desert Island. Abel's was pricier than Thurston's or Cafe Dry Dock, but not as good. In fact, it was about the most expensive meal we had and I couldn't understand why. We ate there at night and the atmosphere was OK, the service neither good nor bad, the lobster OK. Unlike other places on the Island, we didn't get a choice of soft shell (which I prefer) or hard shell, we were just served hard sheet and it was a bit dry and tough. The steamers were quite good, but not worth the hefty price.

Abel's has long been our favorite place for lobsters on Mt Desert Island. It has a beautiful view of Somes Sound, and consistently perfect lobsters and steamers.

As other reviewers point out, it is not the cheapest place on the Island. But if you enjoy good food and atmosphere, it provides great value.

Somes Sound is one of the most scenic parts of Mt Desert Island. Abel's is right on the Sound away from the crowds. It has both picnic tables outside and a rustic dining room with huge windows perfect for watching the sunset at dinner.

The lobster roll with homemade potato chips makes a great lunch outside. The lobster and steamer dinner is always perfectly cooked. Both lobsters and steamers are kept in a tank with seawater for a while before cooking--there is never any sand in the clams. Only hard shell lobsters are served, and they are always cracked before serving, making it easy even for kids to eat. You can watch the runners bringing the lobsters up from the wood-fired cooking shed. There is a full bar and a decent wine list. There are also a few things besides lobster on the menu, although I've never ventured further than the lobster Caesar salad.

It is a friendly, family run restaurant and is often hosting birthdays or family reunions. Our kids have been coming since they were two years old, and it is one of their favorite restaurants. Abel's is only open for a relatively short summer season, so check that they are open before you go.
