The Cupboard has an outstanding reputation in mid-coast Maine as a great breakfast/lunch place because they make their breads every day on premises and the other ingredients are really fresh and well prepared. I hadn't been for lunch because I rarely go out in the middle of the day - generally we prefer to go out for dinner. We finally went to the Cupboard a few days ago and were happy to find their reputation to be well justified. My husband had the bowl of haddock chowder and a half tuna veggie sandwich. At first he thought the chunks in the chowder were potatoes but quickly discovered they were fish - he said it was an amazing amount of fish and really delicious. I had the roasted pepper, spinach, mushroom and goat and swiss cheeses sandwich which was grilled. The balance of flavors was just right and while it's a loose sort of filling, it didn't drip all over the plate but held up nicely. The breads are really good, too. We didn't want dessert (too many calories) but I'm going back for the wonderful looking cream puffs soon.
The restaurant will close for the season after Nov. 24 and is only open for breakfast and lunch but it's well worth a visit either this season or next.
