My take on this restaurant is that it is understaffed. Our food was quite good, but the wait for it (at 1 PM on a weekday) was unacceptably long. Indeed, we waited far too long even for our order to be taken. Our overworked waitress was pleasant, but neither she nor her supervisor (who was present at the bar but did not take up the opportunity to pitch in) was apologetic.

Two years in a row just terrible service and mediocre food at best. In 2016 with 4 for dinner ordered a second glass of wine as the entrees were delivered (waitress never even looked our way betw salad and entree). Was finished with the entree when the waitress arrived with the wine--told her to take it back and bring the manager over. Manager less understanding than the waitress. Had to return this year because entire tribe wanted to try (13 of us plus a tiny tot ). Asked waiter for bread to give to the tot--sure right back--15 min later we flag down another server who says sure thing only to return with crackers because they have no freaking bread. Tiny tot's Dad orders an entree of Mussels which arrives with a small fresh baked loaf of bread. You can't make this stuff up--DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME HERE--eat at Damariscotta River Grill or King Eider's Pub or anywhere else in Maine.

This is a reliably good pub house just outside of downtown Damriscotta. There is a menu full of typical Maine eats, an extensive cocktail list, a decent wine list, and a variety of desserts. One secret is that they have gluten-free pizza, but it is not advertised on the menu. This is great for two of my family members who have serious metabolic issues and cannot do gluten. Otherwise, the choices are sandwiches and burgers without the bread salads, or asking for most of the seafood plan.

The service -- as with the last time we visited this restaurant -- was slow. It wasn't lazy vacation slow, it was more than an hour before entrees were served and the server did not address it. My father in laws fries were cold. The pizzas looked like they had been sitting as the cheese was less than ideal.

Of the things that we had, those that were best were seafood, including the fried haddock (fish - not the chips) and the raw oysters. The Cajun mussles were good, but not very Cajun. Lots of fennel and cumin, but less spice (good on the garlic). The regular pizza was okay (but again the cheese was a little cool). The French onion soup was divine.

Based on a local recommendation my family of 7 went for lunch. Just outside of town it was an easy walk to get there. We were seated quickly. As we ordered we were informed that several of the menu options were not available. Ok, no problem. Then we waited. Played some trivial pursuit. And waited. Our appetizers came. And we waited. More trivial pursuit. After 1 hour we were told by the waitress that the turkey sandwich one of us had ordered was not available. A new meal was ordered. And then we waited. When our food arrived it was typical pub fare (no complaints but nothing special). Our drink order was messed up. When we finished 2.5 hours had passed and we were the last ones left in the restaurant save for one person sitting at the bar. We wanted to get out. The bill was brought with an automatic tip built in (for service ?). And we waited. I finally got up and walked around until I found some one to pay. We were glad to leave. We won't be back.
