Harbourside Inn
Reviewed 13 July 2013

For our first excursion into Maine, we discovered an absolutely marvelous inn that ended up being an experience never to be forgotten. Harbourside Inn in Northeast Harbor is a charming step into a time period not easily found in today's hustle and bustle. With beautifully appointed rooms in a very peaceful wooded setting and very gracious hosts who provide attention to every detail, the Inn is beyond expectation. Evidence of the care and love given to the Inn by the hosts can be seen in every little detail, even in the crispness of the beautiful Maine mornings while sitting on the sun porch amid homemade blueberry muffins, fresh fruit, coffee or tea, while having wonderful conversations with the other house guests who wonder down from their rooms. Though back home in Colorado, Harbourside lives on in our memories as the best ever!

Room Tip: Visit Harbourside Inn website for views of the rooms. Each offer a different decor and experience...

My husband and I have vacationed in Maine every year for 30 years and we always stay at the Harbourside Inn, run by the Sweet family in Northeast Harbor. We are drawn there by the beauty of Acadia National Park, the Harbourside's peace and quiet, and the Sweet family's warm hospitality. The Inn is gorgeous and conveniently located -- a short walk to town or up the driveway to Norumbega Mountain. The breakfast porch is a great place to meet new people or catch up with friends while enjoying muffins and fruit. There is no television at the Harbourside (which we appreciate) but you can stay connected via WiFi if you wish.

Room Tip: Each room is unique. Most have working fireplaces. Some have kitchenettes. All of the rooms are b...

When we got our of our rental car at the wooded entrance to the Harbourside Inn, the only sound we heard other than the birds was a person playing a flute. Playing very well, actually. As it turned out, the flautist was no amateur, being a 30 veteran of the New York Philharmonic!

For the five days we spent at the Harbourside, we never heard her practice again, what we heard instead was the sound of peace and quiet. This is a perfect place to stay if your goals for your time on MDI don't include pushing down crowded sidewalks in Bar Harbor.

Location? We could ride our rental bikes directly onto the NP Carriage Roads, and down to the harbor for a day spent island hopping on the Beal and Bunker mail boat. (They bungee your bike right on top.) For our early morning sunrise on Cadilac Mountain it was an easy drive over to Seal Harbor and then North. One night we headed over to Southwest Harbor for a great meal at Fiddlers Green. Another easy drive. And we did head into Bar Harbor one night for the crowds and a wonderful dinner at Cafe this Way.

The Inn? Recently updated with all new fixtures and flat panel large screen TV's? NOT ON YOUR LIFE! This is a different kind of place altogether. This probably isn't your place if you tend towards upscale corporate chains. But, if you like clawfoot tubs and original wood floors and working fireplaces and woods all around you, this is for you.

Hospitality? Outstanding. Fresh blueberry muffins with real butter every morning actually don't get tiring. Especially with fruit, juices, and excellent coffee. Coffee or tea from a Keurig machine is available around the clock, with to-go cups provided for that dark drive up to see the sunrise.

Definitely a place worth returning to. Oh, and that flute music we heard. Actually the musician was in town to perform at the Mt. Desert Festival of Chamber music right down the street. We were able to see her and other (actually) globally renowned musicians during our stay. If you are there in July/August and appreciate classical music, it's worth investigating.

Room Tip: We loved #4 with a little kitchen (one night we did cook-in) and especially our private entrance dir...

We have been coming to the Inn for 13 years and each time we are received as if we were part of the family. The accommodations are warm and comfortable. The gathering in the mornings with the others guests, at one's own convenience are very pleasant. The Inn keeper has a gift of hospitality. We highly recommend the Harborside Inn.

Our friends were getting married at the nearby Asticou Inn and we thought this a cheaper option than that hotel. It is a large, quiet inn. All the workers were extremely friendly and they offer muffins and tea every morning! The area is gorgeous and the inn is within walking distance to the main street in the town. Definitely recommend this place. Plus they have a very strong wifi signal!

Room Tip: We were on the top floor in the middle of summer and didn't need anything but a fan. Not any no...

We stayed in the Harborside Inn for six nights. It was an excellent decision to do so. At first we booked a fancy hotel in Bar Harbor but we regretted and were lucky to book the Harborside Inn. The Inn is located in Northeast Harbor only 15 minutes’ drive from Acadia Park gate. We enjoyed Northeast Harbor, it is less touristic then Bar Harbor but offers you all what you need for a beautiful vacation; relaxing atmosphere, good restaurant and nice places to explore in the near neighborhood. The Harborside Inn is a 19th century house that has a beautiful character. Each room is different and offers a unique atmosphere. They serve small continental breakfast of high quality home-made blueberry muffins, juice, excellent organic coffee and fruit. The hospitality is great and the service is perfect. We recommend this place for Acadia visitors and people that want to relax.

My wife and I have been returning to the Harbourside Inn for many years. There is no better place to settle in for a week or two and just relax and enjoy the the Island and Acadia National Park.
