I took my family out to Gypsy Sweethearts on the last weekend of their season. There was no hint that they were closing up shop for the winter. We could tell the salad greens were exceedingly fresh. My family enjoyed their seafood dishes both entrees and small plates. Mussels and grilled portobello shrooms were two especially flavorful dishes. Dessert was not stunning but pretty good (cappuccino creme brulee and apple caramel cake).

We've been going to Gypsy Sweethearts during our annual trip to Ogunquit Maine for at least the last 15 years. And with good reason. We can't speak highly enough of the cozy place right in the heart of walkable Ogunquit. This family owned and run place serves up an eclectic menu featuring some interesting Mexican & creole items, such as lobster tacos or creole shrimp as starters. Our favorite main dish: shelled lobster in lemon herb cream sauce over spinach tagliatelle or the almond crusted haddock over spinach & potato gratin. Yummy! Daily specials are offered. There is also a nice selection of homemade desserts as well as an extensive list of reasonably priced wine.
Dinner for two with two starters, two main courses, a shared dessert and a nice bottle of wine will run around $125, well worth it.
Gypsy Sweethearts is closed in off season, from late autumn through winter until mid spring.

The almond encrusted haddock is also rolled in buttery ritz cracker crumbs. Salad dressings are homemade. My salad included dates. Very unusual. A friend chose a raspberry vinegarette and said they should offer it as a bread dip. The waitstaff was wonderful. On a busy night, they honored our reservation even though we were late due to car trouble. A fabulous evening. The locals in this area of Maine are lovely. Great front porch table for people watching.

We thoroughly enjoyed our tapas dinner at Gypsy Sweethearts. It was recommended by the bartender at our hotel, and we are grateful. In a previous posting someone complained about small portions, but tapas are small portions! We chose five including the chicken satay, and they were all delicious...lobster tacos, lime cotija dip with chips, potato gnocchi, crab cakes. I also tried a very lovely glass of Maine made honey lavender mead. Our only problem that night was that they were busy and tried a new system with waiters that didn't work too well. Other than that, it was great! Tip: It is a good idea to make a reservation.
