“Anniversary Trip”
Reviewed 15 January 2014

My husband and I had never been to Ogunquit, but we decided to go there to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. What an absolutely lovely place! The Colonial Inn was wonderful! It was beautifully renovated with plenty of areas to sit and talk, read or just enjoy having some quiet time. It was definitely one of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in. The staff were wonderful and the location was perfect. It was within walking distance to lots of shops and restaurants. The only thing that I could complain about was the size of the breakfast room. It was extremely small, but you could take your food outside on the porch or to other places at the Inn, which we did. We would definitely go there again! It definitely made our anniversary trip even more special!

Dear Kathy J,

Thank you for choosing to stay at the Colonial Inn for your first trip to Ogunquit! We are glad that we were able to make your anniversary trip enjoyable. The new beds are definitely one of our biggest compliments since the renovation and we are happy that you found them as comfortable as other guests have! We agree that the breakfast room was a little tight last season…This year we plan on creating a little outdoor space off from the breakfast room for guests to enjoy their breakfast. Our porch is also a great place to eat if the weather is good! We hope that you will come back and visit us each year for your anniversary and thank you for your kind words.

Kind Regards,

We stayed here at the end of October, to meet up with friends who were booked at another Oquinquit (sold out) hotel. We were SO glad we ended up at The Colonial!! The staff, ambiance and amenities were delightful and the renovations were done with a caring, discerning eye. The experience of staying here mirrors that of a small, chic European boutique hotel. We WILL return!

We stayed at The Colonial Inn for 1 night mid October 2013. It is a lovely hotel and has been renovated beautifully. The bed in our room was huge and was the most comfortable bed of our trip! Front desk staff were very helpful. We would certainly stay there again and would recommend it.

This review is basically a carbon copy of the immediately preceding review written by ThreeOnTheRoad. We had almost an identical experience.
We stayed at the recently renovated Colonial Inn during their last week in operation before they closed for the winter season, but based on the service we received, particularly from Thomas at the front desk, we would never have known it was the last week before closing for the season. From my initial phone call from the road inquiring about availability, to the day we checked out, he could not have been more helpful, pleasant, or welcoming.
We thought the inn's remodeling brought it to a level of luxury that we weren't expecting. We loved the modern room and bathroom within the historical inn, and also loved the decor, done primarily in spa/ocean colors. It was all very relaxing.
We were offered hot cider and freshly baked cookies each afternoon/evening in the lobby, which was a nice treat for the chilly evenings when we were there.
We thought our room was very clean, and the bed was very comfortable, and we too thought the linens were of top quality.
Also, our room, which was called "ocean view" did, in fact, have a view of the ocean. We even got up early on our first morning there to see the sunrise from our windows, and went down to the Marginal Way/ocean walk to take pictures of the sunrise. I believe there are even some rooms that look directly out on to the ocean, with balconies. That was not our room, but yet, we still had very nice views. The hotel itself is not directly on the ocean, at least it didn't seem that way to me. But, it is on the street that runs closest to the ocean, and the walk to the Marginal Way is VERY short.
The only place where I would suggest some improvements would be in the free breakfast area. This breakfast is very similar to the breakfasts offered at Hampton Inns, but without the wafflemakers. Also, the tables and chairs in the breakfast room are more like outdoor furniture, and the styrofoam plates and plasticware seemed a bit cheap. But, I will say the blueberry muffins tasted freshly baked! I think this room is probably designed for the summer visitors, perhaps in beachwear, so that may be the reason for the casual atmosphere. But, it really doesn't fit with the decor/attitude of the rest of the inn, which includes a beautiful piano in the reception/living room area! I guess we could have taken our breakfast out there to eat - I just didn't think of it.
To me, I would say if just that room's furniture were upgraded during the off season, to match the decor/style/taste of the rest of the inn, it might make a difference. That is the only reason I am rating it a 4 star, instead of 5 star stay.
We would DEFINITELY go back to the Colonial Inn, and hope to do exactly that sometime during their busy season!
Thank you, Thomas and staff, for a wonderful stay!

Dear nfall2010,

Thank you for all of your kind words. We are so happy that we exceeded your expectations, both with Thomas’ customer service and with our recent renovations. The great view from the third and fourth floors often surprises our guests. If you are up early enough, as you mentioned, you can even watch the beautiful summer sunrise! Aside from your lovely compliments on the room, we are sorry to hear that you found the breakfast décor less appealing. However, we are glad that you enjoyed the fresh baked muffins and other breakfast items. We have future plans for the breakfast room that will hopefully make it a little more appealing and inviting. Guests may also take the breakfast out in the lobby or on the porch. We are looking forward to your return visit this season!

Dear JorgenG2900,

Thank you for your lovely review. We love hosting family getaways throughout the season. The family rooms that you were referring to are in our East Building. Each has two queen beds and a balcony or patio. Some even have those BBQ pits in front of the rooms. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay and hope that you will return soon!

As frequent visitors to Ogunquit we try to stay in different places each time. Hearing about the renovations to The Colonial Inn, we decided to stay there. From the time we arrived to the time we left, we had a wonderful experience. Thomas at the front desk was extremely helpful and truly made us feel welcome. The lobby is warm and inviting with hot cider, coffee, tea and cookies always available. The location is perfect...we were able to walk the Marginal Way each morning into Perkins Cove. We stayed in the main building on the first floor and were thrilled with our room....it was absolutely gorgeous. The linens were beautiful and luxurious...the bed one of the most comfortable we've ever slept in. The bathroom was huge with an oversized walk in shower. Our experience was perfect in every way....we will definitely be returning!!!

Dear ThreeOnTheRoad,

We are glad that you decided to give the Colonial Inn a try and that you ended up finding your stay enjoyable. The cider and cookies are a popular fall amenity that we are happy to offer guests as well as our welcoming environment! The rooms in the Main Inn are lovely, as you mentioned. The one you stayed in on the first floors is a Superior King room which is one of our largest room types in this building. We cannot wait to have you back and hope you will find your stay just as enjoyable as the last!

When we reviewed the Maine 2013 Travel brochure and saw the sketch of the remodeled Colonial Inn, we knew that was our destination. It did not disappoint. The welcome every time we walked in the door was warm and genuine, the room we had was spacious, and the common areas had a nice "life" to them. We hope to go back soon. Parking was good, but everything was really available by foot from the Inn's location. The wraparound deck was fabulous.

Room Tip: We called the hotel and they guided us to a room that fit what we wanted. I'd call. Main Buildin...
