Betty Doon Hotel
Ranked #34 of 36 Hotels in Ogunquit
Reviewed 29 July 2013

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Betty Doon for a quick one-night stay. Great location, but there were issues that will prevent any future stays. Note: This was after staying at a rustic lakeside cabin with no insulation for over a week, so 'rustic' is not a problem.

The quick list of issues includes (1) musty room, (2) broken AC, (3) sand all over the floor, (4) noise from the gift shop upstairs, and (5) management staff ethics.

A few days before our stay, I received a call from the hotel staff asking if we would change rooms to accommodate another customer. They said it would be an upgrade from room 31 to room 8. We said 'fine...no problem'. After our arrival, it was clear our basement level room was not an upgrade. So the management staff had lied to us. Very bad.

When we arrived we found a musty room with a broken AC. When we took off our shoes, we found the floors in the entire room and bathroom were very sandy. We had to wipe off our feet before climbing into bed. During the upstairs gift shops open hours, we heard customer's footsteps very clearly. When my boyfriend reported the AC, musty smell and sandy floor to management, they seemed disinterested in the feedback.

While unpacking from my trip, my clothes still smell of mildew from our one night stay at the Betty Doon. Next time, we'll pay a bit more and stay at one of the better accommodations nearby.

Room Tip: 1st/Basement-level rooms have noisy gift shop overhead. Stay away from room 8 and adjacent rooms (6...

The Betty Doon is within walking distance of the beach, and is right in the central area of Ogunquit. This is a somewhat old-fashioned place, rooms are not large, some are a bit cramped and oddly shaped where they have added bathrooms, are knotty-pine with plain but perfectly functional furniture. The beds are comfy, though, and the water pressure is good. The bathroom fixtures are old and pretty basic, but again, oerfectly functional. So in a very overpriced resort town, this is a great budget place, staff is friendly, and if you just want a clean place to stay, this is a good choice.

Home-made blueberry muffins served each morning in the lobby, but no breakfasts. No elevator, but there are some ground-floor rooms. In-wall electric heaters for chilly days, in-window air conditioners for warm ones. I'm quite fond of this place.

Room Tip: Some rooms have small balconies, and I would ask if one of those were available first.

This small hotel is in a perfect location almost on the corner of the main intersection. You can easily walk to all restaurants, bars, shops and the beach. The Betty Doon has a large parking lot with assigned spots. Check-in was simple and the room was ready early. We were in Room # 1 which was so cute! It was super clean with 2 comfortable double beds with patchwork quilts. Lots of windows with shades and very pretty valances. It had an air conditioner and a wall heater and a refrigerator. The bathroom was basic but had a nice hot shower. There were 2 chairs and a table outside and very pretty flowers. It was very quiet since we stayed here on Columbus Day weekend. I would definitely stay here again!

I have stayed here on numerous occasions .. it is an old building rooms are very cottage like and dark wood. But it is clean, comfortsble, and the location is the best for shopping, beach and restaurants. Staff is friendly ! The grounds are nice. Fresh coffee and muffins served in the morning.
Prices were reasonable in comparison to other lodging in area. Only complaint I have is checkout time to early 10am.

I love this place -- it is right in the center of Ogunquit village and an easy walk to Ogunquit beach or the Marginal Way. The rooms are charming and you can select your room using the online reservation system. We always stay in the same room every year if possible because we have a favorite. If you absolutely have to have a modern hotel room with the latest plumbing fixtures, you probably won't like staying here, but I love the pine-paneling and the classic decor and the blueberry muffins in the morning.

Room Tip: Check out the photos for each room on the online reservation webpage -- each floor is a bit differen...

Just returned from this hotel. Location is wonderful but rooms were very musty smelling. Rooms were very clean but noisy. Take ear plugs if you stay there. The show Mid-Life Crisis at theater in back of hotel was wonderful Cast did an outstanding job and kept us laughing for thr whole time. A MUST SEE while in Ogunquit.

This is a sorry excuse of a Hotel, unfriendly management, tin box showers exposed plumbing and pipes with incorrect labeling of hot and cold. Dreary decor cramped rooms with little or no facilities. The Decor if you can call it that looks to have been sourced from a goodwill store, plastic flowers adorn the dark cheap paper thin knotty pine walls, tired carpets complete the mess. What a crime as this hotel is in the prime location in the town, only minutes walk from the glorious beach and the centre of town.
Who ever owns this establishment is either flat broke or is merely playing at the hospitality game. Management should visit other Hotels in the area to see how dismal this place is.
