“Beautiful hotel at the Marginal Way.”
Reviewed 18 October 2011

We spent one night at the Anchorage By the Sea while on a trip to New England and had a very nice experience. The weather was perfect for the walk on the Marginal Way which can be accessed directly from the grounds of the hotel. The grounds are remarkably beautiful and kept in pristine shape. There was a whimisical fall display on the front lawn that captured the "Angry Birds" phenomenon with great creativity. The hotel was beautifully maintained and clean. Our room was ocean front with 2 queen beds and a nice balcony for enjoying the view of the ocean. My only complaint about the room was that there was no coffee maker. There was a small refrigerator which was nice, but for a coffee drinker, having to go to the lobby in the morning for a cup of coffee was a real inconvenience. We had dinner at the Surfside Restaurant and had wonderful food...the Lobster Stew was delicious. They had musical entertainment by 2 musicians from the Ogunquit Playhouse's cast of Miss Saigon. It was a nice touch for a fall weeknight in Maine where things are beginning to wind down for the season. We enjoyed an afternoon bottle of wine on the grounds...they have lovely adirondack chairs overlooking the ocean and the marginal way. The pool looked very nice, and there were some brave souls sunning and using the hot tubs...we didn't even think about bringing swimwear with us to New England in October! I would definitely recommend this hotel for it's convenience to the shopping in Ogunquit and the access to the Marginal Way.

We really enjoyed our stat here (only one night unfortunately). Our room overlooked Marginal Way/ocean - on first floor so had a great view. The room and bathroom were fine - comfy beds, clean room and very nice bright bathroom. We had a couple of drinks in the bar which we really enjoyed - good atmosphere. We would return to Ogunquit and would definitely stay at The Anchorage by the Sea again - really enjoyed it

My partner and I stayed at The Anchorage for a week in early October. Full disclosure: My cousin is affiliated with the Anchorage. He is why we knew we wanted to make Ogunquit the base for our first significant trip to Maine. It is on the pricey side. But we had a nice room with a beautiful view of the ocean and Ogunquit beach. The two weekends we experienced were full bookings and that's when you might notice your neighbor's TV. But the room was clean and well serviced, the WIFI worked great and the room safe was ... well, safe.

We ate several times at the property's Surf Pointe Grill. Again, a bit pricey - especially for a full breakfast - but very good food, and the wait staff was always friendly. For dinner, I recommend the Lobster Stew. On mornings when we didn't want a full breakfast, there is a snack bar available with cereal, muffins and fruits. Downtown Ogunquit has many restaurants within walking distance of the Anchorage that are worth discovering. Few are cheap, but all seemed to be good.

The property is right on the famous Marginal Way. A short stroll along this promises photo ops for lovely Maine scenery.

Regardless of our "connection" to the Anchorage, its comfort and convenience will certainly ensure our return.

It is hard to find a more beautiful location along the Maine coast -- simply wonderful panoramic views, located on the magnificent "marginal way" walkway ending in Perkins Cove - a quaint, but now fairly commercialized fishing village.

The rooms are adequate -- beds were a bit small (double beds are a bit short for me). They were clean and well appointed. We stayed in the Towers building across from the ocean views and it met our needs.

My big issue was with their restaurant employees-- we visited in October on a rainy day and were having breakfast -- when we started the meal, they had overhead heaters that made the area comfortable, however, they soon turned off the heat and it became very chilly. When I requested they turn up the heat again, they dismissed me saying that the heating system was just fine -- I complained -- they ignored me -- very disgusting. Although I could not get anyone address my concern -- I would normally address this issue with the appropriate reduction in the tip percent, however, because I have more than 6 people in my family, I was charged a standard 18%. Not acceptable !!

I will not return.

This was our fourth stay at this resort in as many years. On our last two stays my wife and I stayed in the Lightship building as it is a bit quieter than the units across the road by the ocean. We had made our reservations in advance and although we were recognized as previous guests we were put in a room that was noticeably smaller than on our previous stays. Our stay was for three nights. The room was unappealing and dark as it had only one window in the rear corner of the room. Our room had a king bed which was sagging on both sides; only the middle of the bed was still firm. We brought the bed situation to the attention of the front desk the next morning and they did put bed boards under the bed that day; however, that only made the bed marginally better. On our third day, the maid had failed to leave any bath soap. When we returned from cycling and wanted to take showers we had no soap. I called to the front desk to request new soap; two hours later it still had not arrived. I called again and the soap finally arrived. At check out I told the desk clerk that we were disappointed in our stay; he noted what we were unhappy with and said he would discuss this with the manager. The manager was in his office at this time as there was an incorrect charge on our bill at check out from the dining room that had to be removed; the desk clerk had to get the managers approval for this. I guess it was not important enough to the manager to come out and discuss our stay with us. Nor did we receive any follow up communication from the manager regarding our stay. On a positive note, the grounds of the resort are very nice and a nice leisurely place to relax. Also, a very nice pool and hot tub area. Not sure if we would stay here again; our stay this year was not up to their usual standards. Fortunately, our lodging during the rest of our two weeks in Maine was exceptional and met or exceeded our expectations.

This is New England at its finest! You will not be disappointed. Park your car and walk to anything you need. Go in the Fall! It is beautiful! Lovely small town, fabulous seafood caught fresh daily and served. Anchorage by The Sea is breathtaking! Look at their pictures on their website.

Room Tip: There is a room for most price ranges.
