“The perfect base for hiking and biking in Acadia National Park”
Reviewed 4 September 2013

If you don't want to camp in nearby Black Woods Campground and want to avoid the bustle of Bar Harbor, this is the place for you. Nicely decorated, simple rooms with WiFi, TV and plumbing that works. There was no maid service while we were there but the price is right, the continental breakfast served (included) in the adjacent store is tasty and the staff is very friendly. It is the perfect base for hiking and biking the eastern part of the island. Leave your car at the Inn and use the free National Park Bus service (runs every half hour) to get you to your trail head or carriage road.
Want some action? Bar Harbor is only a 5 minute car ride away and if you want fine dining go to the Burning Tree Restaurant, which is less than half a mile from the Inn. Be sure to make reservations ahead of time, because it is very popular.

The Otter Creek Market (attached to the Inn) is my point of focus of this review. It is a safe-haven in what could otherwise be a daunting task of camping. The Market takes the "roughing it" out of camping for those of us who are just getting our feet wet. It offers greek yogurts, chardonnay, smores fixings, pizza-to-go, camping pillows, hot coffee, and anything else you might think you need when your camping but don't have the room to pack or just plum forgot! The market is run by sweet, generous people that will help folks out, just out of the kindness of their hearts. Our family is excited to return to Acadia, especially now, knowing that whatever doesn't make it into the minivan can be purchased at the Otter Creek Market!

If you want posh and elegant, go to Bar Harbor. But if you want a friendly, quiet, simple, down-to-earth Inn with a wonderful local feel about it, stay at the Otter Creek Inn. It is near everything you want to see and do on Mount Desert Island. If it is very hot, it is not a good place to stay, but if it is reasonably warm with the usual cool Maine nights, it is the best place to stay on the Island.

Traveled with four couples, two rooms in the Inn and both cabins. Weather was a bit chilly first night when we were sitting around outside the cabins. As Randy the Innkeeper walked by we jokingly asked where was the fire pit? He returned with a portable fire pit, firewood and starter fluid!

This attitude personifies he management philosophy of Otter Creek Inn. No strangers, only friends we haven't met yet.

If you want luxury this may not be your place. If you want comfort away from the crowds of Bar Harbor near Acadia National Park, this is it!

We wanted to be close to Blackwoods Campgrounds where our daughter was staying with friends. And I wanted a quiet retreat to write that was not in the hustle and bustle of Bar Harbor.Wifi was available and breakfast was fun. Lunches hadn't started yet since we were there at the very start of the season, but the menu in preparation looked great.Randy, the manager, was warm and hospitable. It was just what I was looking for!.

Clean room with nice antiques, conveniently located but away from the Bar Harbor bustle. Bring your own shampoo and hair dryer, though, and if you have T-Mobile, you'll be halfway to Bar Harbor before you get reception. Breakfast is at the Otter Creek Market next door, where you can also get great sandwiches and very reasonably priced lobster you can eat in your room, at one of the tables in the market, on your front porch or at a picnic table on the lawn. The market has fixings for 'smores and the like. The manager is very friendly. We had a motel room with two comfy double beds; there also are a couple of cabins. One drawback of the motel is that it is an older, albeit updated, building and, as one other guest mentioned, you can hear your neighbors. Our fridge also was noisy. Near the acclaimed Burning Tree restaurant and not far from the Acadia Institute of Oceanography.

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms might be quieter.

Had an enjoyable stay! Every thing was wonderful classic small town coastal Maine from the market next door where you can get a great cup of coffee & muffin, to a fresh cooked lobster dinner, or even camping gear! Only steps away from the Southridge trail of Cadilac Mt in Acadia Park. The rooms were quaint, clean, and very reasonable... Can't wait to go back next year!
