Special iconic spot overlooking penobscot bay and islands while learning a bit about lighthouse history.

It is a short walk to the base of the lighthouse and another short walk up a couple of flights of stairs to the lighthouse itself. A very pretty 270 degree view of the water & islands with a wooded area to the back. Worth a day trip, as are most of the peninsula`s.

Went early in the morning, so did not get to see inside, but the advantage was that no one else was there either. Climbed steps to beautiful view of cove and bay, could hear chickadees and plenty of other birds. A lovely spot and pretty park too. Photos on park bulletin boards below give history and show how Owl's Head got its name. Also scenic drive or bike ride to get out here passing a busy general store and Owl's Head Lobster Co. I happily missed a turn and drove through the quaint but small village of Owl's Head. A nice excursion while staying in Rockport.

We road bikes from Rockland harbor out to Owls Head Light House. Great ride. It's best to do the loop around Owls Head. Going out had a few hills but once we left this beautiful spot we continued the loop with little or no difficulty. Our only regret was we packed a lunch and missed out on Owls Head General Store. It's more of a quaint little restaurant and was packed. Wonderful scenery along the way to another historic light house.

We don't need to go inside the lighthouse or the light apparatus to enjoy lighthouses, but some people do. The hours for this and other lights on Penobscot Bay are short and sometimes irregular. Call ahead if you want to walk inside. If you're content to roam the grounds, enjoy the sea breezes, and smell the air, then just go and enjoy.
