“Not Worth the $12 Admission Fee”

Not as terrific as some of the others here seem to think. I'd skip it next time and go to the children's museum instead.

PMA is one of the finest museums in any size city and how fortunate Portland is to have this gem. The exhibits are well-thought out and beautifully presented. This should definitely be on the "must see" list of all visitors.

“This is a major art museum”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 June 2014

Even though the Portland Museum of Art does not participate in the North American Reciprical which allows donors to other museums throughout the country free admission to member museums, we paid the full admission price anyway...and it was worth every penny. Frankly, we were surprised that an art museum in a relatively small city could be this comprehensive and this good. The permanent collection is extensive and features a number of Winslow Homer works as well as a good sculpture collection. The Richard Estes photo realism special exhibition (through Sept 7) is worth the price of admission by itself.

A visit to Portland, Maine should include a stop at this museum.

“Don't miss this beautiful museum”

Very easy to navigate, starting on top floor and working down. Special exhibit (Richard Ennis hyper-realism) was excellent, and the other collections were better than I expected. Nice cafe and small gift shop.

“Outstanding art museum.”

This museum puts on absolutely fabulous showings--if you don't care for a topic, check their website and come back later in the year. The current show is the photorealistic painter, Richard Estes. We loved it. Their regular exhibits include a couple each of Monet, Renoir, Marguerite Zorach, Katz, and other well-known artists, with, of course, an emphasis on other Maine and American artists. There is a lovely statuary room, and there's an attached, restored/maintained mansion. A family membership is not pricey, and if you live here or visit often, it's utterly worth it. We're frequent visitors here. They have special programs that are worth investigating--this visit was coupled with a lecture at the Portland Public Library on "The English Garden in America." We then made our way to the museum where the charming and enthusiastic docent gave a guided tour of paintings that had to do with gardens and with the latter half of the 19th century that our lecturer had focused on...an absolutely delightful combination!
