Owner description: With an extensive permanent collection and nationally renowned exhibitions, the Portland Museum of Art is rightfully taking its place as the best regional museum in the country. The PMA boasts a considerable permanent collection, with beloved works of American, European, and Contemporary art, as well as significant holdings of Maine art-highlighting the rich artistic tradition of the state and its artists. The museum brings it all to life with unparalleled programming. The museum has a small (caveat - I am from New York City) but lovely collection and exhibitions. I thought all the rooms were nicely curated, with good lighting and positioning of artwork. and descriptions/explanations. Even the guards were pleasant and a few approached us and told us that while they were there to protect the art they were knowledgeable and happy to answer questions, something that never happens in NY. Whoopie pies discovered in the cafe were delicious because who doesn't got to a museum for whoopie pies? We spent about 2 hours leisurely viewing the entire museum on a rainy afternoon. Check Groupon before going because they frequently have discounted museum admission deals for this museum. Would recommend a visit here if you like art.

I specifically went to the museum to see the works of Winslow Homer, Andrew Wyeth, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Mary Cassatt. There were other wonderful works and the displays are nicely done. Everyone was helpful. For the size of the collection, I thought the admission price was high. Parking is difficult. The lot for the museum is for employees and handicapped.

It was a rainy day in Portland so we decided to go to Portland Museum of Art. A bad day turned to be great one!

The PMA is well worth a visit. It has some jems: Joan Miro, John Singer Sargent, Picasso pottery [ who knew ] and the restored mansion. Give it a try on free Friday. You won't be disappointed.
