“Worth the trip”
Reviewed 10 October 2013

We always make sure to schedule at least one and usually more visits each year and have done so for at least the last five years. We have even hosted a college mini-reunion there. Unless you are one of the fortunate few who live on the island or anchor your yacht in the cove, getting there requires a ferry trip which is fun in its self. the return trip after dinner can be quite beautiful also.

The food is excellent and varied, prepared with care. We have found the kitchen will gladly make changes to satisfy particular tastes. The wine list is excellent. For us the best is sitting out on the lawn overlooking the cove at a fully dressed table and enjoying a meal in relative quiet.

We try to plan our visits by the weather forecast, and have eaten on the porch as well as inside, but the outside is best. Be sure to check the ferry schedule, and the staff will help and give you the best advice.

We landed on the island and didn't know what to expect. We were pleasantly surprise it was very quiet and peaceful , we ate a the general store for lunch and the owner Amy was very nice to deal with. It's a great place to go in the summer.

“Back in Time”
Reviewed 8 July 2013

This is my second year staying at Diamond Cove on Great Diamond Island in Casco Bay, off Portland Maine. This location is an old military base that has been renovated. Most of the homes are built around a parade ground with a few near the cove. There are other newer home that have built since.

The first year we rented a home for a week on the parade ground with 6 bedrooms for family reunion. The house reminded me of homes in West Point with the high ceilings and unique wood trim. This year my mom is renting in a condo for 5 weeks a bit closer to the dock/cove and near the General Store.

This island is so relaxing. No cars, no franchises, just families in homes with a small General Store , a dock, a very nice pool, a small beach, and a restaurant. You make your fun like in the 60's. if it wasn't for the cell phones, I am not sure we would know what year it is. The cell phone service is a bit spotty, so it is perfect excuse to stay away from work.

You can rent bikes and kayaks to get around the island, take the ferry to Portland for shopping and more dining options, or visit another island.

The only negative for some might be the lack of air conditioning. Did i mention the 60's? There is generally only 1 or 2 weeks in the 80s or higher so most people just grin and bear it. Some homes will have an air conditioner in 1 or more bedrooms.

If you want to relax, this is the place to do it.

“Utterly Amazing and Unique!!”
Reviewed 27 April 2012

There are few places left that haven't succumbed to the ever encroaching uniformity and blandness of suburbanization and chain stores but Portland and Diamond Cove in particular have managed to remain something utterly one of a kind and special. Diamond Cove will appeal for it's rich history and it's physical beauty. Nearly half the island is uninhabited forest and the views from all angles are spectacular. Plus just a half hour by ferry you're in Portland, our families favorite small city in the country. Our family has been for the past few summers and we can't wait to get back this year. The kids spend their days riding their bikes (no cars on the island), hunting in tidal pools for critters, combing the many beaches for shells and sea glass, summer camp, playing with the other kids, swimming in the pool and ocean or playing in the rec room where there is pool, ping pong, video games and a bowling alley. There are also lots of kids to babysit so we can head down to the restaurant for a romantic dinner or drink whenever we want to. There are numerous rental options from 2 bedroom to 5-6 bedroom houses and from the ones we've rented they are nicely kitted out and spacious. I've been meaning to write this review for awhile as it really is the most amazing place our family has ever vacationed because it has something for everyone. I almost don't want the secret to get out!
