“Not bad”
Reviewed 30 May 2014 via mobile

We went for a quick lunch. Service was good. It was nice being outside but you are just in a parking lot. Food was ok. My only complaint was that I think every Mexican restaurant should have free chips and salsa. So we paid the 6.95 for chips and guacamole. After we finished the handful of chips our waitress asked if we wanted more. We said yes because we still had salsa and guacamole left. When our bill came we had an additional charge of $1.10 for xtra chips. Really?? 8 bucks for 2 small bowls of chips a small bowl each of salsa and guacamole.

“Good food, good price!”
Reviewed 16 May 2014

We enjoyed sitting out at the picnic tables with their view of Portland's working waterfront.

Service was efficient, food good...all three of us were well pleased and would go back there.

"Hot sauce" wasn't really spicy.

Fish taco: fish was mild, sweet, delicious.

“Authentic Mexican Spot”
Reviewed 10 May 2014 via mobile

Visited on an early Saturday night and was pleasantly surprised at how many people were there already. Always a good sign! Everything was delicious. My only suggestion is that chips and salsa should be gratis much like other Mexican restaurants. We had a fish rice and bean bowl, three different tacos, and sampled the rice and beans and mushroom fundito. We'll probably be back!

I know dumb title, but awesome food...really. This place is authentic and the flavor is bursting out everything i tired. I saved room for the Key Lime Pie - IT WAS TO DIE FOR!!!!!!!

I will go back again - and bring my family from NY when they come visit to try this great place.

Thanks El Rayo! - some one tell me what that means....

“Great Things Come in a Small Packages”
Reviewed 28 March 2014

In an old, formerly run-down Citgo gas station, there is a culinary revolution occurring in Portland, Maine. El Rayo Taqueria is a unique find because the food (California-style Mexican) is fresh, flavorful, and totally awesome. The interior seating is limited (many afficianados grab the food for take-away), but this is the only "limiting" factor. The guacamole is beyond belief---nit overpowered by junk...just fresh ingredients delicately blended for an amazing taste, yet still chunky with avocado. The soft, corn tortilla tacos are heavenly...especially the fish taco and the taco al carbon (beef)! It is not fancy, but it is kitschy cute and the food more than compensates for the low-frills decor. Friendly, personable staff and attentive service! All I can say is---miss this and you will have regrets later in life! Try it, you'll love it!
