We really wanted to see the Tate House after visiting Burnham Tavern because both offer a look at what was being built in the late 1700's. We took the guided tour of the Tate House to learn about the history of the area and of the house itself. It is more basic than modern houses but so advanced for the time period. Loved the little details in each room and the fact that is shows a little age with warped floors and shifting door. Interesting for adults but be aware of the narrow but manageable staircase. Loved the windows and the history.

It's a short distance from downtown Portland and a stone's throw from the Maine Mall. The history is valuable to young and old...

Loved the tour, the kids not so much but we knew that. The craftmanship is amazing.

The Tate House is situated in historic Stroudwater Village in Portland. It is a Georgian style house built in 1755 and was the home of Captain George Tate the senior mast agent for King George III. Enjoy a tour of the home and learn the story of the mast trade and its relationship to the Revolutionary War.
My tour guide was excellent and knowlegeable.

Very interesting to see and to hear how the family lived in this Pre-Revolutionary War home.
