Owner description: Gritty McDuff’s, Maine’s Original Brew Pub specializes in hand-crafted English style ales and traditional and creative pub fare, in a friendly and fun atmosphere. Both Gritty's fine ales and the pubs have won countless "best of" awards through our twenty-six years of operation. Our standard brews are session beers, Gritty’s Pub-Style Pale Ale, McDuff’s Best Bitter, Black Fly Stout, allowing one to have multiple beers within a reasonable time period without overwhelming the senses. Our seasonal and varietal ale offerings are more adventurous, some with a higher ABV, and some with higher IBU. We brew a beer for all craft brew palates. For the diner, we offer traditional pub fare alongside not so traditional specialty items. Our pub-style long tables with benches easily accommodate parties of all sizes and add to the camaraderie.

We went down to the Old Port to check out the sights while we were in Maine visiting my husband's family. We had my 14 year old and 10 year old in tow and they hate seafood. We stopped at Gritty's (as they call it now) for an early dinner. The atmosphere might be great at night, but it's really dark during the day. It's a typical tavern. The service was average and so was the beer. The menu was typical pub food. Everything is around $10-$15 bucks. I had the fish basket and my husband and daughter got the special. This is where the restaurant redeemed itself! The special was macaroni and cheese with buffalo chicken, blue cheese and buffalo sauce mixed in. It was topped with fried halapenos and served with a side of crispy cornbread. At first, we thought the portion was too small, but it was just the right size. For dessert, we ordered the blueberry pie with vanilla ice cream, based on a recommendation from the waiter. He said the owner's wife makes the pies....and boy, can she bake! It was delicious! If they sold whole pies, I would have bought one to take home. I'd go somewhere else to eat down at the old port, but if you are going to stop in there for a beer, order the mac & cheese and blueberry pie!

Recently visiting Portland ME., we ate at Gritty McDuffs. The atmosphere was great, the chowder and shepherds pie was super yummy and we had more than enough help getting a ramp out for my wheelchair. PLUS, it was later on at night and the manager opened up his gift store just for us. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
ALSO...I would like to say how kind and warm hearted the people are there. We went down Fore St. to MAXWELL'S POTTERY and besides being closed the store entrance was about 8 very steep steps up. My friends were peeking in and at that moment the owner came by and he, also , opened up the store for us. PLUS, with the help of my sister and the owner and an entire Chinese family walking by, they lifted me into the store. TOTALLY AMAZING. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. Moments like that make life a little more special.

The Old Port is where this local beer franchise began. What was once a path-breaking microbrewery having an onsite brewpub with strong local color has morphed into a mere shadow of it’s former self. Replacing it at this flagship location is just another mediocre and characterless local tourist trap. Bartenders and servers have all the charm of ravenous wharf rats. Above the bartenders’ heads on hooks hang hundreds of serially numbered members’ beer mugs. These regular inebriates are the only patrons who appear to matter here. If you hanker for a seismic hangover after drinking overpriced ales that all taste about the same, then this is the place to do it. Located just next-door is the pub’s souvenir shop; its product lines are perfect for folks who can’t resist showing off their lack of discernment. The restaurant here serves up insipid pub grub at outlandish prices; if you like that sort of thing, this local parody of pubdom is just the ticket. If your cruise ship docks nearby and you venture into the Old Port in search of local color and some superior suds to slake a powerful thirst, this is about the last place in or near the Old Port that you’ll find either.

Went here just for some beer and was not disappointed. Sat outside in the back area and it was very nice.

This is a seat-yourself pub with wonderful atmosphere. It has great beer selections and good pub food. We sat at the bar and the bartenders were attentive. It's a great place to take a break from shopping and sight seeing and get some food. It's a very relaxed and everyone made us feel welcomed. It's right in the heart of downtown Portland.
