We kayaked out into the bay to the Fort. It was a nice place to paddle out to and, from there, if you wanted to, you could skip over to Peaks Island as well. Not much at the fort but interesting to walk around and see what it was like. Pretty views from the top of the fort and beach.

This beautiful park should be walked. The lighthouse is easy to get to and fun to see how they used to operate and live.
the Goddard Mansion is just a shell but the view is awesome. It is For Sale for those who might want to restore a landmark.

If you're not from the area (like us), you need to book a water taxi to visit this island-fort. Not all of them go to Fort Gorges, so keep calling if one of them says no. You'll also need to plan around the tides - if the water is too low, bigger boats can't approach without hitting rocks, and the dock is too high up from the water level. The taxi was $100 round trip, with about 90 minutes on the island. The fort itself is free. Worth every penny!

We (me, wife, 7 & 10 y.o. kids) were alone for most of our time, although we caught glimpses of another family a few times. It's a big fort, with 3 levels and plenty of dark crevices to explore. The fort isn't 100% maintained, so you do need to be careful of missing railings and rotted floors, and it is possible to get hurt. But being able to see a civil-war era granite fort was amazing. We couldn't believe in how good of shape the brickwork was still in.

Our family has great memories of exploring this old fort in the Portland harbor. We sailed our small sailboat right into the cove north of the fort, tied up and got out to explore! There are so many surprises and I had no idea there was an open courtyard right in the middle. Spectacular views of Portland and other nearby islands in Casco Bay.

Take the Portland Paddle tour because it is worthwhile to get inside. The city does a good job keeping the fort clear of litter thanks to the Maine Trails Network and Portland Paddle. Beautiful architecture and the state of ruin with trees and bird life in the upper regions just adds to the evocative atmosphere. Climb to the top for great vista of Casco Bay and Portland Harbor.
