So glad to have finally been there when this was open. Great tour. Very informative but not boring or too long. Well worth the trip.

“Very informative”
Reviewed 30 September 2013

A well-preserved testament to the house that shaped one of America's greatest literary figures. It's not where he wrote but where he grew up before heading off to college at 14.

“Neath the spreading chestnut tree . . .”
Reviewed 27 September 2013

A person from Portland at our B&B did not know there was a Longfellow Home in town. Frommer's did not even mention the home while AAA thought it was a gem. As reviewers can attest, there is a home and it is a gem. Our docent was a former English teacher/thespian who was personal, enchanting and knowledgeable. She related the life and influence of Longfellow, a professor before he was 20 and a Harvard prof later in life. As our guide said, he was world famous during his lifetime. We bought a book of his poems for the younger generation who may no longer be required to memorize this wonderful poet's classics. A must see in Portland.

“Home of Longfellow when he was a boy”
Reviewed 5 September 2013

We got a gentleman with such intensity and genuine excitement about the history of this place, the 90 minute tour was over too soon! He covered almost every detail of the house, it's furnishings and it's relevance to how it affected Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's life and work. Well worth the time to visit this house!

“Fascinating”
Reviewed 4 September 2013

We knew something about Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the poet. But we were fascinated to see the house he grew up in, pretty much unchanged from the way he knew in, thanks to his sister. The house is full of family furniture and there is little from after the 1850's. The tour guide provided interesting insights into middle class life in a small nineteenth century city. This was an hour well spent.
