So we got to Porland during the sleet/ice storm over Christmas week. Due to drive to another part of Maine, it was already sleeting when we found ourselves in our rental car, parked, calling hotels in Portland to see who could take us on such short notice. We calld the 1-800 number for this hotel and got one rate but were seeing a better rate online, so we asked for the hotel's direct number. Within minutes, we had a very nice room for the night at a great rate and the car was parked in a secure lot for only $12. The staff were all friendly, accomodating and helpful. We checked in, selected our FREE in-room coffee, tea and danish options for the morning, unpacked a little and went out to explore Portland. This hotel is a beautifully restored historic building and as it's in the middle of town, you're only steps from all of downtown Portland including the waterfront. (Try the Crooked Mile right across the street for more coffee, breakfast, and lunch options. REALLY good!!) This is not the fanciest hotel, but it is clean, warm, safe, warmly decorated, the bed was great and they accomodated us on NO notice during a storm that paralyzed much of the state for days. It was a great unplanned date overnight in the midst of holiday and family bustle and stress and we will definitely plan to stay there again.

Room Tip: If the 1-800 number doesn't match the online rate, call the hotel directly. Rooms on the spa l...

We just stayed at this hotel for 8 days as a Christmas vacation. The location couldn't have been more perfect. This boutique type hotel built in an old historic armory is on the main street (Fore Street) that runs through the historic district and one book from historic Wharf Street. The day before we arrived there was a 3 foot snow fall. It made this whole area a beautiful winter wonderland in a quaint New England town. Within less then a mile we walked to bakeries, cafes, shops, gelato stores, the narrow gauge railroad, the Victoria mansion and the Portland stage playhouse. Strolling the cobble stone streets with snow blowing in the air was great. The hotel was very clean; the room was spacious and warm and the staff were helpful and cheerful. They even scrapped the snow from our car the day it iced over. The restaurant in the hotel is a bit pricey but the food was very good, especially the soups and fresh seafood. There is also a lounge with entertainment and light eats. Parking is valet only at $12 a day but they are very responsive and helpful. There is also a full spa with exercise equipment and a full selection of massages, facials, manicures and pedicures and all other spa services. I found this to be the perfect location for our visit and give it the highest marks.

Room Tip: There are balcony rooms on the top floor, all others have views of the surrounding streets.

the staff and the amenities are way above board...the attention to detail is exceptional..this historic building is what brings us to Portland every time..most of the staff have been there for many years..in the hospitality field this is not the norm..the Armory Lounge has Ben..we have been going to the Regency for years..and Ben never forgets us..it is the best in Portland and most of all the waterfront...park your car in a secure lot and you can walk everywhere...some of the local establishments are the greatest..you cannot visit Portland without doing all local businesses..

Room Tip: at this hotel there are no bad rooms.

I stayed here for a week for week and it felt more like a vacation. The rooms are beautiful, spacious and very clean. The location couldn't be better! I didn't even need to rent a car. The hotel car picked me up at the airport which was only about 15 minutes away. I was fortunately able to walk to the office, Starbucks, and a ton of restaurants and little shops. Everything is within walking distance! While I didn't visit either, there is also a restaurant and bar at the hotel. Even though it's 4 degrees and snowing, I'd come back again during winter if I could stay at the Portland Regency again.

We came here for our Ruby Wedding Anniversary.
The decor is more traditional than modern, but this all lends to the charm of the hotel, setting it apart from corporate chains.

Great location, nice room, comfortable bed.

We will stay here again.

I get to Portland a few times a year and am trying all the local hotels. This is easily the best so far. Don't expect glam and five star, thats not Portland, do expect a genuine warm welcome and nice clean rooms. All the people in house are brilliant, can't do enough for you wether its a fresh pot of coffee to your room at 4am (jet lag!) or even making sure you're happy with your room etc etc.

Room Tip: No 'bad rooms' but the 3rd floor rooms do have very small windows, I preferred the 4th floor...

We stayed at the Regency twice recently while in Portland for meetings. On our first visit our requested room was not available due to maintenance so the hotel gave us a complimentary upgrade to a suite. Our room was part of the recent renovation of the fourth floor. It features a door leading out to a deck looking out to the harbor. We enjoyed the stay and appreciated the upgrade. The second stay was in the Governor's Suite also on the fourth floor. It has a microwave, refrigerator, keurig coffee maker, flat screen tv, couch and matching chairs in the front room along with a small bathroom and even an ice maker. The bedroom features a king bed, flat screen tv, and gas fireplace that is open to the front room giving you a "home away from home" feel. Both rooms have doors that lead to the deck overlooking the square with a view of the harbor. The spacious bathroom off the bedroom has a jetted tub and large walk-in shower with options for a rain shower head, traditional shower, and adjustable wall shower jets. Slippers and monogrammed bathrobes add a nice touch. This room is amazing. The staff is friendly and professional as we have come to expect. We recommend getting breakfast included with the room. The food never disappoints and the waiter, John, is one of the best. A very relaxing way to start your day at a hotel that is more than ordinary. If you are looking for a hotel that doesn't have the chain "anytown U.S.A." atmosphere choose the Regency. We also like to step around the corner to eat dinner at our favorite restaurant Fore Street. The Regency is perfectly positioned to give you access to the many things that make Portland great.
