“A Comfortable Historic Hotel Close to Portland Harbor And Nightlife”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2014

This hotel is located in what was the Maine state armory. There is a circular driveway in front of the hotel where there are valets waiting to take your car. We drove up in our rental before check in so that we could drop of our luggage before leaving to drop off our car rental. This went off without a hitch. The doorman opened the door for us as soon as we approached the doorway. There was always a doorman there who always opened the door just in time. After dropping off the car rental we ate lunch at Miss Portland. The service was good and the food was delicious and fairly priced. We walked up to the center of town and walked through the farmer's market. We went to Shipyard brewery to take a tour. Their samples were outstanding! We returned to the hotel a little after check in time. My wife booked a room with a deck because that was all that was left at the Historic Hotel of America. When we checked in the young woman at the desk informed us that we had been upgraded to a suite! We had to walk up to the elevator with our luggage (which we had retrieved quickly). We went up the elevator and walked through a maze and another elevator until we found the door next to the stairs. We opened the door and found that it had not been closed properly. We walked in the room and called the front desk to inform them about how we had found the door just in case something was amiss or missing! Upon entering the front door we were astonished by how much room there was! The restroom was directly across the front door. The bathroom had a large walk-in shower with a rain shower head and two shower heads in the wall that hit your body while you're showering. It felt decadent because back in California we are experiencing a serious drought! My wife chose to use the shower wand instead. The restroom had the most counter space that I have ever seen in any restroom anywhere! The usual restroom appliances were there including a lighted make-up mirror. Upon entering the front door there is a large hall to the right that leads to a desk. There is an armoire beyond the desk. This is the only closet space you get in the place! We each got about four hangers each. The bed was king-sized bed. We slept very soundly there for three nights! Across the foot of the bed on the wall is the largest flat screen television I have ever seen in a hotel room. I would guess that it was at least a 76-inch screen. It was humongous in a very large room! Beyond the bed was a couch (looked like it is a sofa bed) with a coffee table in front of it. There was a tall round table beyond the coffee table with two tall chairs. The room also had a kitchenette type area with a sink, refrigerator, and coffee maker. There was a 30-inch screen flat screen television in that area. The entire length of the room on the side facing the street was glass with two sets of doors. Two doors in each set can be opened to the large deck! The deck had six chairs. The deck was the size of the length of the room! We had a view of the Portland Harbor and of the numerous bars and restaurants in the area. In spite of this, we were not disturbed by noise in the evening.

They have one of the most responsive and accurate thermostats we have ever encountered on our travels!

The only that happened that startled us was one morning when the 35-mile per hour gusts and rain popped one of the doors open because it had not been secured properly.

After unpacking we left for dinner at the Porthole restaurant where I enjoyed a two lobster dinner and my wife enjoyed the best cod she has ever had! When we returned to the hotel later that night we found that we had had turn down service. We had turn down service every night without a hitch! We were treated to two pieces of mint chocolate each night!

In the morning, we took advantage of the coffee/tea and pastry service this hotel provides. The pastry was okay and the coffee/tea was good. You hae to inform the front desk each evening what time you want this delivered to your room. My wife got the local paper from the lobby every morning for me because they don't bring it to your room though. I would love to return to this hotel. Even though not every suite is worth it, this one is! The room number was 410.

Room Tip: Get a room with a deck. Even if it rains, it is a joy to be able to look out onto the sky and the st...

Ok, there was an upgrade involved, but we had already reserved a 'new' room with balcony. What we got was huge, Literally. Very comfortable, very nice bath, crazy shower with the rain head overhead, two wall mounts, and the main shower! Very friendly staff, efficient and easy to work with. Very helpful Front Desk who can tell you everything you need to know about Portland. Good location, good rates. And you're a five minute walk from Even Tide Oysters! We stay at the Regency three, four times a year and will continue to do so.

Room Tip: If you can afford them, always ask for a balcony room. Some of their rooms have four posters.

I booked this hotel a year in advance because we were attending a UNE graduation. Prices were very decent. We had previously stayed at the "HInn" on the bay, and our view was of a rooftop with bird poop. I knew we definitely wanted to stay in the heart of the town in the future! This location is perfect - you can walk almost anywhere! Quaint and historic, and on the cobblestone path, the grounds were nicely landscaped and clean. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and nicely finished. The entire staff was pleasant and helpful. Nice that they had a lighted magnifying mirror in the bathroom. Ours would not stay up, but I did a self-fix with a hair clip to improvise, and let them know when I checked out. This was also a nice and quiet place, at least the room we had. There is so much to do in downtown Portland, and this hotel was great for the value compared to others I looked at. I will definitely be returning here. One big disappointment - the hotel restaurant was not open for lunch either day, and we always like to patronize and try out the on-site eatery at least once. For a hotel of this size, they should be open morning to night.

Let's put it this way: The only names I remembered were Jose and Mia. Those two were nice and friendly. Everyone else we ran into was rude and curt. It started with the guy that met us at the curb all the way to the front desk manager into the restaurant and then the bar. Everyone seemed to be annoyed that I was asking for something (like a glass of water or bed boards). For a hospitality industry they really got it wrong. I will never stay at this hotel again and I would suggest you don't waste your time and money as well. This is a very expensive hotel for the treatment you receive. There ARE much better choices in Portland, Maine! i.e. The Pomegranate B&B.

Room Tip: We had ask for the 3rd floor as it had just been renovated. The room was clean and new but the bed...

This hotel is so amazing and I am glad we found it for our trip. The location is great, we walked around town and always found our way back to the hotel. It's right in the heart of Portland Maine, so there were many options for dining, shopping and drinking. The rooms were very nice and clean. Service was great, especially the complementary ride to the airport/ amtrak station. When we return next, we will stay again!

This was our first stay at the Regency and our experience was great. Our check-in was quick and our room was well appointed. The bed was comfortable, the comforter was plush as were the bath towels, of which there were plenty. Little touches, like turndown service, along with chocolates and closing of the blinds made it feel like a cruise ship. We opted for the breakfast package and were pleased, but if you pass it up there are lots of places for breakfast in the immediate area. The location is the Regency's strongest draw to us. It is right in the middle of everything, a short walk to the Museum, the waterfront and Promenade Trail. There's lots of places for dinner and lunch that offer a wide variety of menus and prices. ( check tripadvisor for a good pick or ask at the valet station ) Grab a map at the desk and head out to the city, its walkable and interesting. We will definitely return

I just returned from a four-night business trip stay at the Portland Regency and the hotel itself was probably the highlight of my visit. So comfortable, clean, classy...beautifully appointed rooms, wonderful bedding (none of those motel-like bedspreads--all sheets and comforters), excellent linens and bathrobes, and plenty of little touches that make your stay just that much more pleasant: turndown service (complete with bedtime chocolate and closed window shades), complimentary coffee/tea/pastry delivered to your door each morning (a big hit with my fellow business travelers), lots of bathroom amenities including a jar of cotton balls and swabs, and an all-around atmosphere of being well cared for. The downstairs bar was very pleasant for a predinner cocktails (didn't get a chance to eat a meal at the hotel). And as if this all was not enough, the location is amazing, right in the middle of the port of Portland, surrounded by cobblestone streets and numerous small shops and restaurants. Don't miss the Holy Donut shop around the corner for your morning fix!
Can't wait to return to Portland and this hotel!
