“Super relaxing”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 March 2011

We did the spa thing. Very nice spa - jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and very nice shower/locker rooms. Did a 50 minute massage and it was great. We had appetizers and cocktails at the Armoury Lounge in the hotel. Dark and inviting. The rooms was nice, not huge but not small. Room service breakfast was tasty. Great location, a few blocks from the water but one block from shops and restaurants.

My wife and I usually go to the Regency 4 or 5 times each year.
i have never bothered to review it because I was afraid other people would fing out about it and we would have trouble getting a reservation.

The hotel is absolutely terrific in every way. The location is in the Old Port area - a perfect spot to explore Portland from and within walking distance to several restaurants and pubs.

The service is also exceptional. We don't go often enough to be known, but every time we go, we're treated like royalty. We always get a king room, which is nicely decorated and they offer a turn down service.

We have eaten at 20 Milk Street, their restaurant a few times and have always foud the selection of entrees very good. The food is a bit gourmet as is the ambiance. The restaurant personnel are all very accommodating and we love being pampered.

We usually go to the lounge, which is one of the best in the city. During the summer you can eat outside, which is also nice.

Check their web site for specials. Valet parking is $12 and very convenient. My only gripe is that I have to buy the NY Times - although USA Today is delivered to the room

All in all, the Regency is hands down the best value and nicest hotel in the city.

We stayed over the Super Bowl weekend. Saturday, the weather was awful; it was really nice to be able to retreat to our cozy room. Everyone was very helpful at the hotel; from parking valet to room service. Would definitely recommend this hotel in the heart of the "Old Port".

I attempted to reserve a room with this hotel via my iPhone at approximately 7pm on the same evening I intended to stay there. I never received a confirmation via the online process, and ultimately opted to discontinue the reservation. Evidently, the reservation went through without my knowledge as the full charge appeared on my credit card bill. When I called to explain, they refused to reverse the charge and told me I could dispute the charge with my credit card company if I wanted. Cancelation policies are to protect travel providers from the cost of lost opportunity, which quite obviously wasn't the case here.

GMRESPONSE, General Manager at Portland Regency Hotel & Spa, responded to this review, 2 March 2011
We always welcome guest feedback, however given the seriousness of your allegations we do feel the need to respond to your situation specifically. Your attempt to book a room online was successful and you booked it at 7 PM on the same night that you wanted to arrive. You secured our last deluxe king room on a busy Saturday evening. We have looked into the profile you created when booking your online reservation and not only was the webpage working correctly when you booked, but an email confirmation was automatically generated and sent to the email address that you provided at the time of booking. You listed your email as one that ended in "@no.com" – perhaps it was not entered correctly? In your review, you mention that you opted to discontinue the reservation, however entering the credit card information is the very last step in the reservation booking process and you did complete that process.

If you did truly make the reservation in error, we would have been more than happy to assist you if you had called our hotel that evening to explain your situation. Unfortunately, when you entered your credit card number online and then pushed "confirm now," it became a guaranteed reservation and we did hold the room for you all evening. Because you did not attempt to call the hotel to confirm your booking or to rectify your mistake, we had no idea that you had decided not to come, which is the reason you gave our Front Desk Manager for not staying that evening when you called two weeks later to ask for a refund.

Our accounting department has researched the charges and found them to be 100% accurate. In future bookings, we strongly suggest double checking all information that you enter online, especially an email address so that our automatically generated confirmation letter is sent to the correct address. And we encourage guests who are unsure about whether or not an online reservation was booked successfully to call our hotel to confirm, especially if you have hit the "confirm now" button when booking online. We have reservationists available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to assist you. We have to say that we were quite shocked that you would choose to use the word "thieves" in your review, given that there was no error on our part and we would have been willing to work with you had you called us that evening after booking your reservation.

This is the third time that we have stayed at The Portland Regency in the past year and have both agreed that when we return this is where want to stay. The service at this hotel is welcoming, gracious, and completely professional on many levels. Always a smile and making sure that you have everything that you need. The rooms are tastefully decorated, comfortable and a great night's sleep. The Armory is the place to be for a fabulous cocktail and is also highly recommended by other bartenders as their choice as well. We look forward to starting our day with the best breakfast in Portland and John's wonderful hospitality. We recognize outstanding service when we see it and we have certainly found it here. Not to mention the location is perfect!

because we are never disappointed. We had a lovely room on the third floor with high ceilings and a big bathroom. Loved having robes for both of us. The restaurant on the first floor is great for breakfast (and the coupons for breakfast were part of a great package we got on this off-season visit). The corned beef hash is to die for! Our favorite part of the hotel is the Armory bar on the lower level. Our bartender, Ben, made heavenly cocktails and was so friendly. We will definitely be back again. We also had an incredible couples massage with hot rocks in the spa. Terri especially liked Wendy, the message therapist. The best she's ever had.

We were very disappointed in our room at the Regency. It felt more like a walk in closet than a luxurious hotel room. We have travelled the world and never before stayed in a hotel room without windows. There was a skylight which had icicles on it and dripped. The shade on the sky light was filthy and when it was closed the dirt could be heard rolling down the shade. The heat was noisy. The web site advertises Gilcrest & Soames toiletries but the shower has tacky wall mount shampoo and body wash. The hotel does not provide conditioner. The rooms have no coffee maker but you can have coffee delivered complimentary prior to 8am. The hotel feels old and in need of repairs and updating. There is no self park option. Mandatory valet parking adds $12 per day plus tip to your tab. The restaurant was overpriced so we dined elsewhere except for brunch. We would not recommend it nor would we be back. Portland is great and Old port is wonderful for walking. There are nicer hotels in the area and next time we will opt for one of those.
