“Perfectly French!”
Reviewed 18 June 2014

The last good French meal I had in Portland was way back in the good old days of the Brattle Street. I must say that French cuisine, traditional French haute cuisine, is hands down my number one favorite. A recent visit to Petite Jacqueline has put a smile on my face as great French food is still alive in Portland.

For an appetizer, I had the Moelle, which is a very generous split beef marrow bone served with a crisp parsley salad, salt and bread. Beef marrow is very easy to screw up. Cook it too short and it is grainy, cook it too long and it turns to a runny mess. This was dead on perfect. It had the correct consistency and the flavor was rich and the salt and parsley salad put it over the top.

For the main course I had the Poulet Rotis, which is a half chicken served in a skillet over mashed potatoes and a rich pan jus. If there is one thing the French do very well, it is chicken. Many people tend to overlook chicken in a restaurant, but to do so at Petite Jacqueline is a mistake. The chicken is brined and then slow roasted. The skin is crisp and the meat, both the dark and the breast, are perfectly moist and full of true chicken flavor. The mashed potatoes underneath the chicken are light and compliment the chicken very well and the pan jus is so rich and full of flavor you almost want to ask for a glass of it to drink!

Oh, and the wine. The carafe of wine is a great value and very good.

French food, really good French food in Portland? Head to Petite Jacqueline.

“Everything was excellent”
Reviewed 11 June 2014

The best French we have ever had? No. Really wonderful? Yes. But to be fair that is being compared with some really off the charts restaurants in Montreal and Quebec. Escargot was very tasty although the forks were a bit too big to get at the little critters. We both had Hanger steak and frites, very, very tasty. Service was fantastic. Prices are reasonable for a more upscale night out. The venue is a bit noisy but that"s just right for a place that advertises itself as a bistro. Should be that way. Menu is a bit limited, but all looked quite good. We will be back for sure.

“Authentic French! Don't miss this restaurant”
Reviewed 10 June 2014

So many wonderful choices; I could have eaten everything on the menu. I had the

SALADE DE POMME DE TERRE 6-MINUTE EGG . DUCK-FAT POTATOES . ANCHOVIES . SPRING ONIONS...10

MOELLE
BONE MARROW . PARSLEY SALAD . SEA SALT . WARM BREAD...13

LUNDI: BURGER D'AGNEAU

Each course exceeded my expectations. It's difficult to find bone marrow on many menus, so I always order it when possible. I'm usually only partially satisfied or disappointed; however, this bone marrow was delicious. I wish I had saved room for dessert and/or a cheese course.
