The hotel staff is professional, cheerful, and accommodating. The location is ideal and close to just about anywhere you'd like to walk. I highly recommend this hotel over any chain.

stay away! we've stayed in courtyard marriots that had more comfort and warmth, but for half the price.
there's a super loud club right across the street blasting music 'till late at night. kind of like being stuck in a 90's frat party. fun? no.
the room is furnished in a mix of various types of vinyl... an engineered wood floor, and wood-esque formica furniture. it's cold and uncomfortable. on one side of the king size bed there's a foot-pedal-operated floor lamp instead of a bed side table, so if there are two of you, one will have no place for book, drink, glasses, etc., and will need to jump out of bed to use the foot pedal to shut it's burning brightness down pre-sleep. how dumb.
there's nothing "boutique" about this hotel. "boutique" hotels have been thought out, and are soothing to the soul, or at least interesting. this is neither.
spare yourselves.

Room Tip: don't stay here! really. don't.

We made a last minute stop in Portland, and expected to stay in a Hilton Garden Inn or Hampton. We are so glad to have found the Portland Harbor Hotel instead: it is a real step up. The last minute pricing was competitive with the chains. Many rooms face a very attractive courtyard. The bedding was very nice, the bathroom was spacious and well appointed with both shower and soaking tub. The front desk and parking staff were pleasant. Access to the hotel is awkward: cars pull into a parking ramp under the hotel, with is not very clearly marked. Parking was unexpectedly expensive @ $16/day, and the ramp did not have enough space, so our car was parked outside somewhere. All in all, it was a special stop.

Although more expensive than we'd usually sign on for, this hotel was great. (We're usually 2.5-3 star folks - but decided to splurge to be right in the heart of old Portland.) The location is fantastic - we were able to walk to everything we wanted - and the service was exceptional. Running late for our schooner sailing trip, the valet offered to give us a lift (free of charge) in the hotel's lincoln. Nice! If you don't mind spending $200+ per night, I highly recommend this hotel.

We think that this is an expensive hotel! But, we got what we paid for and then some! Great location, very pleasant staff and some very nice amenities--real newspapers on the week end, complimentary NY Times and Boston Globe in the lobby, Starbucks coffee in the lobby, easy access to computer/printer for airline check-in, and these were the ones that surprised us--complementary bikes for accessing this cool area and complementary Town Car instead of taking a cab!! But, the best accommodation was the "complementary" return of the raincoat I left in our room to my home in Tennessee. I don't know when I have heard "it's complementary" so often during a hotel stay. We would definitely stay and again and recommend to friends.

Room Tip: It is a fairly small hotel--4 floors @ 100+ rooms. In that situation I usually like the top floor...

We had a great couple of days at this wonderful hotel. Albert, who checked us in was very funny and welcoming and they comped us coffees in the garden while we waited for our room. The area around the hotel is full of eclectic shops which my wife loved, and some great places to eat (we loved the salt exchange around the corner).
So why costly? My wife loved the decor in the room so much that she wants a similar colour scheme for part of our house. A thoroughly enjoyable stay in a great place.

Room Tip: Get a room overlooking the garden.

This was a nice hotel with a nice location. The valet folks were really nice and it was helpful that there was a concierge. We asked the concierge to suggest a restaurant in the area and she had several menus for us to look out and I thought that was a really great idea and helpful. The staff was nice and the hotel was really clean, I think the bathroom floors were even heated, which was awesome. They also do a turn-down, where they come and turn on your light and pull down your sheets and give you a chocolate on your pillow so when you come back int he evening you are ready for bed, with slippers at your bed, I thought that was a really nice touch.

The location was really great, it was close to everything and it's awesome that the hotel offers you a car service that can drop you off in town, I thought that was great, if you walked all day and didn't want to walk for dinner you could ask for the car. Valet staff was really nice too.

They only thing I would say that didn't make this perfect, was the walls were a little thin, so you could hear the food carts and people talking in the hallway, but It was so bad that I found it to be annoying. Other than that great stay and cute quaint town.

Oh they also allow your pet to stay here, I thought that was great!

Room Tip: We faced the garden patio area, which was nice.
