“To the adventurer go the rewards.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 May 2012

We've enjoyed Mt Desert Island Ice Cream in Bar Harbor many times and during a trip to Ogunquit (southern) Maine we decided to head up to Portland for the evening to visit an old college friend. We were delighted to find MDIIC's Portland outpost as superbly provisioned as their Bar Harbor shops further up the coast. While Mexican Chocolate has always been a personal favorite we branched out to try the Salted Caramel and Bay of Figs.

And wow. Just wow.

Having had their ice cream before expectations were high and we were not disappointed. This is one of those places that the more adventurous something sounds the more richly you'll be rewarded for choosing it. In addition to having a knack for entertaining nomenclature, they really know how to blend flavor components to achieve a superlative result.

What can I say I'm a fan. Even bought a T-shirt.

“generally good”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 March 2012

I love the salted caramel icecream here, except for my last visit. It was a bad batch...way too much salt and I could not eat it. I also think they should always have 2 people working at all times, there is always a long wait for service

“Creative flavors, delicious”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 July 2011

Last year Mount Desert Ice Cream of Bar Harbor opened a shop on Exchange Street in Portland. There are other good ice cream shops in Portland, but Mount Desert Ice Cream is unique. The flavors are unusual and the creative names aptly describe the flavors. Why have mint chip when you can have Girl Scouts Gone Wild with bits of mint chocolate cookies? Do you like rum raisin? Try the Jack Daniels or The Dude (a play on Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski's love of White Russians in the film "The Big Lebowski"). Also delicious are salt caramel, ginger, hot chili chocolate, and chocolate wasabi. Samples are available for you to try before placing your order.
