“Excellent B&B in a beautiful historic home”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 September 2013 via mobile

First time visiting Portland and we made our reservation based on all of the wonderful reviews on TripAdvisor. What a great B&B in a beautiful historic home! We were greeted by Buddy upon arrival who was friendly and carried our bags upstairs. We traveled with another couple and stayed in rooms 1 and 2. Both rooms were beautifully decorated with comfy beds, a sitting area and all the comforts of home. Excellent location and we were given maps of the city as well as great advice on what to see and do while in Portland. Downstairs in the main living room it was a great place to relax and take in the beauty of this home. Thanks for having delicious homemade snacks, water and tea always available for us and thanks for lending us the wine bottle opener so that we could take our wine on our sail boat trip. The breakfast was amazing and delicious! Cindy took excellent care of us each morning. What wonderful hosts! Only regret: wish we could have stayed a couple of days longer. If we ever travel again to Portland we will be returning to the Inn on Carleton!

We arrived a little early for check-in and Cindy was incredibly warm and welcoming! She helped us get settled in and gave us so much useful information about what to see and do. The inn is in a lovely historic section and walking to areas of downtown are quite easy. Our rooms were comfortable and beatifully decorated. Buddy was friendly and served up excellent breakfasts each morning.

Lovely experience - felt very welcomed by Buddy and Cindy. The accommodations and the home made breakfasts were amazing! The were both very informative and helpful regarding the surrounding areas and sites we may be interested in.
My husband loved the home made brownies - so as we were leaving Cindy surprised us with boxed up brownies for our ride home

We will definitely return!!

This was our first B. & B. experience in over 30 years, and are happy to report that thanks to all of you at the Inn On Carleton, we enjoyed a wonderful stay. We stayed way up on the top floor in room#6,
and Buddy was a good sport in hauling my heavy luggage all the way to the top! We appreciated their list of recommend restaurants, the ones we tried were all very good and with in walking distance. Thanks to the trip advisor community the recommendations!

The Inn on Carleton is a very professional yet homey and very attractive B&B. We would certainly return the next time wer'e in Portland. Buddy and his staff know what they're doing. Upon our arrival were very helpful in giving us a map of the city and showing us how to walk around.

The Inn is well-situated in the West End, a quiet neighborhood full of historic homes. It's an easy walk to the Congress Street arts district, and a longer but not overbearing walk to the historic seaport.

Our room was attractive and comfortable; not the most beautifully furnished of the B&B's we've stayed at, but thankfully not the "frou-frou" style too many places adopt as "charming." The bathroom was large and well-appointed (but what's this trend, even in upscale B&B's, to tiny paper cups?)

Breakfast was very good. Our server was extremely energetic and enthusiastic; she might be a bit much for some people's taste, although her love of Portland led us on our walking tour of the West End. An observation, not a criticism: Couples sit at their own tables. When staying at B&B's, some people like the chance to meet fellow travelers at the communal breakfast table, others prefer a bit more intimacy.

The front parlor is a cozy spot to relax in, sustained if you wish by the snacks that are available 24/7, including (in the summer at least) ice pops. Small but charming garden; we wished we'd had the time to have a bottle of wine there.

Portland is a city worth visiting, especially for foodies. It has put itself through a remarkable revival over the past decade. We had a memorable meal at Fore Street.

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights for a post-baby get-away without the kids. It was much needed and well spent at the Inn on Carleton. The breakfasts were gourmet and delicious and the Innkeepers friendly, welcoming, pay attention to detail and attend to their guests like nothing pleases them more to assure they have a nice time. We loved them. Our room and bathroom were very clean with a great shower! I would have loved to have spent more time here lounging but it is about a 15-20 min. walk to the Commercial Street area down by the water and we spent a lot of time in the restaurants, pubs and shops down there. In an ideal world, the Inn would be a bit closer to all of that; but at least Carleton St. is quiet for a restful night's sleep.

Excellent location, large rooms, nice breakfast, nice innkeepers. Room had a ceiling fan so we didn't need AC. Off-street parking was great and we didn't have to move the car, since the inn was walking distance to everything Portland has to offer.
