The minute we walked into this beautiful inn, my husband and I knew we had chosen well. Our host, Buddy, was incredible. He makes fabulous breakfasts that are not only scrumptious but beautiful and his suggestions for restaurants and sightseeing were fantastic. As bed and breakfast owners ouselves, we appreciate the attention to detail. We felt pampered and refreshed after our two-day vacation. We can't wait to return.

My husband and I planned a quick weekend getaway to Portland, Maine and we booked a room at the Inn on Carleton because we had stayed at its "sister inn" - The Chadwick and loved it there. We wanted to see what owner Buddy had done with his new B&B.

It is a gorgeous building and beautifully decorated. We stayed in Room 3, which Buddy had just redone...the bed was a gorgeous king sized bed and very comfortable. The room even has a gas fireplace. The bathroom is separate from the room, but it almost felt like an ensuite because you had a private door and hallway leading to your room/bathroom.

Breakfast was amazing as well - Buddy cooked up some of his famous lobster benedict and he didn't dissapoint. It was delicious and like our experience at the Chadwick, Buddy is a perfect host and makes you feel right at home.

We were greeted warmly and shown to our large, beautiful rooms. Lovely common areas and friendly owner and staff. The rooms had large comfortable beds and I could not hear anyone in adjacent rooms. Breakfast was awesome and more than expected, as the owner made full breakfats in addiiton to the typically jice, coffee, scones, etc. Very conveniently located for walking around the city to numerous shops and restaurants. I am looking forward to returning for another visit.

This beautiful brownstone is an architectural gem. Combine the beauty of the building with the welcoming presence of innkeeper extraordinaire Buddy Marcum, and you're in for a very wonderful experience. We stayed before Buddy emptied the place of the previous owner's furnishings. I can only imagine how incredible the rooms will be after the sprucing up. Guest rooms are spacious with high ceilings. The common room has a fireplace and a computer for communal use. Breakfast will keep you going until dinner. And Buddy was kind enough to secure last minute reservations at a local restaurant for us. Can't wait to return to the "new and improved" inn however it was excellent as it was. Thank you Buddy!

This place is fabulous. Beautifully decorated, large room with a private bath. The staff is wonderful, friendly and helpful. The breakfast was fabulous, except that they told us that sometimes they serve lobster benedict, and then we were disappointed not to try that! The scones were melt-in-your mouth.

Our only issue was that we were on the third floor and the stairs are EXTEMELY steep - both of us were out of breath when we got to our floor. If you have any health issues, make sure you stay on a lower floor. Because the ceilings are so high, it's a much higher climb than in a standard B&B.

We stayed at the Chadwick, the sister inn to the Carleton, for the first two nights of our stay. Tjhey were full for our last night, and Buddy said that he was in the process of purchasing the Carleton. We were expecting great things for our last night, based on the good Chadwick experience, and got them. Both Cathy and Buddy were fantastic hosts. Buddy prepared some super whoopie pies and Cathy made pecan bars for their afternoon treats....both yummy. Cathy went out of her way to make us a dinner reservation at a wonderful restaurant nearby called Caia (sp?). We loved the Carleton and would stay there again if in Portland. The West End location in a beautiful neighborhood was a real plus for us...gave us a great 30 min walk into the Old Port area while walking on their beautiful brick sidewalks. Gorgeous historic homes on the way. Thanks to both Buddy and Cathy for a great stay.

We recently spent two nights at the Inn on Carleton as our first stop on our first visit to Maine for my husband's 60th birthday. The Inn is beautiful and the location perfect. Buddy and his staff bent over backwards to make our stay special, even going so far as to re-install the air conditioner in our room due to the return of warm weather. Breakfast was amazing, eggs benedict with lobster and a tomato hollandaise. Delicious along with the fresh baked scones and breads. Can't wait for the opportunity to visit again.
