Owner description: A turn of the century immigrant era synagogue celebrating Jewish art, history, and culture in downtown Portland.

I only recently discovered this interesting small museum in a beautifully restored and landscaped synagogue. It is located in Munjoy Hill in what was once a thriving Jewish community (yes, in Portland). It has a mix of local Maine Jewish history and fascinating works of art. We arrived close to closing time but the person in charge allowed us to remain close to an hour, answering our questions knowledgeably.

Beautiful inside view of a synagogue area but really a quick in/out for viewing - was done in less than 10 mins.

Found this newly opened museum, with a renovated sanctuary on the second floor and museum exhibits on the top floor. This year features an interesting exhibit on Jewish summer camps in Maine. Jews in Maine - who knew?!

This synagogue has been completely restored, and looks beautiful with the stained glass, historic photos, and more. The gardens on the outside are a new and nice addition. The staff was very knowledgeable and explained everything about the building and the communities history. There is also usually some sort of local art exhibit being presented at any given time, which was fun to see. Definitely worth taking the time to see.
