“Unexpected Treat and Intriguing”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 April 2014

The building that hosts the Maine Jewish Museum is also a temple in use, which makes it doubly interesting to visit. It is lovely outside and in. The art exhibits were simply hung and otherwise completely engaging. It is a brief stop, but it is very worthwhile.

“A museum worth the visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 March 2014

Not a large museum by any means but worth the visit. This is the way to learn about the interesting Jewish community of Portland - the history is fascinating. The museum is located in side Congregation Etz Chaim which is one of the oldest synagogues in the city. This too is well worth the visit.

“Charming little museum”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 January 2014

The Maine Jewish Museum is a charming little museum and art gallery that deserves a visit. Like the rest of Portland it is an easily walkable destination on the east side of town. The small art gallery and history museum is staffed by enthusiastic volunteers who we found to be knowledgeable and passionate about their fledgling endeavor. The upstairs museum contains Interesting displays on the Maine Jewish summer camps and the history of Jews in the state. Although the art gallery was between shows when we visited, they often host interesting art and artists. The building also contains two pretty meeting rooms for worship, weddings and other events. The upstairs main temple is especially beautiful. Well worth a visit to learn about this relatively little-known bit of Maine history. At the time we were there they were installing an elevator to the second floor.

Thanks for your comments, Brooklyn1612! We're happy to let our visitors know that expansion is underway. This includes a 4 story elevator and new handicapped-accessible bathrooms. Please come back again in the spring - you'll find increased accessibility and a new art exhibit and expanded historical exhibits.
