“Ideal laid-back lunch: fresh food, good beer”
Reviewed 18 February 2014

This place is a classic, cozy tavern with beadboard walls, wide plank floors, and a bar where locals stop by. We love sampling a variety of beers, and with 14 interesting ones available, we picked two Maine brews that we'd never tried before (Mo, and Leaf Peeper Atlantic) for $6 each pint. Items on the food side of the menu were accompanied by notes telling how ingredients are locally sourced from named regional farms. We had a scrumptious soup (white bean, chicken, andouille), a salad, and the Tap House Burger (perhaps too pricey for some pocketbooks at $13). Our server was friendly and helpful. We saw that they had outdoor dining, but we ate at a table inside. Note: the "background music" that afternoon was Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, and Pink Floyd. FYI.

“Good pub food ”
Reviewed 11 February 2014 via mobile

The atmosphere is bohemian with good music and not overly loud.
We had apps including home cured salmon with sautéed onions, cucumbers etc.and goat cheese , tomato bruschetta . The salmon was our favorite. We followed with a lamb burger, turkey burger, salmon with white bean and a mushroom shepherds pie. Our favorite was the burgers which was natural at a pub.
The beer lost is much more expansive than the wine. There are plenty of microbrews from Maine. We felt like red wine which was limited, as expected . We had a Sangiovese which was way too astringent but followed with an Umbrian red which was perfect. The std fries and sweet potato fries were both fresh and good.
We had no room for dessert.
The service was attentive but spacey . The server was not very informed but found answers.
The cost was average for the food.

Noisy. So dark you can't read the menu or see your food. Ordered a burger medium rare. It arrived well done. Food was flavorless. Service inconsistent. Beet salad was good, although there was nothing subtle about the dressing. Left with a stomach ache. Okay place to have a drink with friends, I suppose. Beyond that, this place is not a helpful addition to Portland's restaurant scene.
