“Spot on from start to finish”
Reviewed 6 December 2013

First of all thanks to Danielle (via Jim) for hooking us up with short notice seats for tonight.
Very small, intimate restaurant that like other great restaurants in the Portland area try to source as much as they can from local farmers and foragers. We are delighted with the fresh offerings, and again, so pleased that such great raw material comes from our virtual back yard.
We started off with a polenta small plate and a mushroom toast appetizer that were both full of flavor, very creative and unusual. These little dishes really set the table for the entrees. She had rib eye which was one of the most tender, tasty pieces of beef we have ever experienced. I went with the braised pot of the day which was beef done with olives and other goodies on a bed of pasta that was cooked al dente. I was not starving so went with the smaller portion (nice touch, that) and it was just perfect for me. Amorosso wine for both.
Our waitress Katie (or Katy, apologies in advance for getting it wrong) was right on top of things and really wonderful all around.
Only about 30-35 seats in this little slice of foodie heaven and all were occupied when we were there. Super friendly staff, great place for a quiet dinner. Definately want to work our way through this menu. Bravo!

“Second try - no better than first”
Reviewed 4 December 2013

Do not go to the Blue Spoon if you're hungry. Interesting menu, but SMALL portions. Side salad is no more than eight tiny lettuce leaves. I do not mind paying $12 - $15 for a sandwich, but would like to feel sated when I leave. We also ordered a starter of fried fingerlings - with caper mayo for $5. It was no more than a half a small potato. Good enough tasting, but too pricey. Food took quite a while, too. We gave this spot two tries with similar results. There are many other better options for lunch.

“You can do better in Portland”
Reviewed 3 December 2013

Went to Blue Spoon for the second time, and it was unimpressive. Lunch bill was impressive but not the food. The menu is creative but I think they can't do it properly. For example, small and over done sandwiches, salads that are basically just greens piled on a plate with a few sprinkles of something. Burger is tiny compared to price. Soup looked like sludge. Food took a long time to come out of the kitchen which is probably why some sandwiches were overdone and leathery.

It used to be a cute, hip place but I think you could do a lot better in Portland which is full of small eateries with creative menus.

“Good food prepared with care”
Reviewed 2 November 2013

The place is small but cozy with a bar that seats around 5 people as you first walk in. Before six p.m. there is a great deal: a white and a red wine for $2.50 a glass. The wine isn't the greatest, but it is drinkable. The bread is pretty bad, though. The menu is a delight. There are a bunch of small plates, a few appetizers, some salads, and then a nice choice of mains. The trouble is that some of the portions were small while others were fine. The prices were usual for Portland. I believe the highest price for a main was $25 and the salads were around $12 each. The tapas are less expensive. It is obvious that the chef cares about the food as the sides went well with each dish. The service while friendly is a bit inept. It is a place I would go to again. One other thing: the place is very warm. The fans were going, but that didn't help.
