I was visiting a friend in Portland for a few days and on my first night we went here to grab a drink. My friend had heard good things about the contemporary cocktail joint. Well, the austere interior is the warmest thing about the place. We posted up at the bar and tried to make conversation with the bartender who seemed completely begrudging about answering questions or engaging with us in any way. The food menu is really limited (this is definitely not a dinner spot) and the "gravlax" we ordered bore no resemblance to gravlax. It was strips of packaged smoked salmon with dried out tough edges and no mustard sauce (I'm part Finnish so I know the difference.) Lastly, my friend's cocktail, a vodka-based one with spices in it, tasted like a child's playtime concoction. you're probably thinking, well why did she order that? Fair enough, but no bartender checked in once to see how we were enjoying out food and drink. Best avoided. Go across the street to Sonny's.

Stopped in the last week of October, on a recommendation from the B&B we were staying in. (THANK YOU GUYS!!)
We could not have been more pleased. We sat at the bar and were treated to wonderfully prepared cocktails, a "show", ( the multiple steps to create these fantastic adult beverages). and a delicious appetizer. We ordered the bread and butter. For $2 we got a house made brown bread with a side of mushroom butter. YUM. We saw a few happy hour small plates go by, popcorn and a few sandwich boards. All looked great. But you definitely come for a PERFECT cocktail. We chose a few. The "Left Hand" was strong and balanced, the "Brandy Crusta" also was good to the last drop.
They have only been open for a few weeks, and we wish them GREAT success and we will most definitely return when we are in town. There are many other drinks to enjoy and food to sample.

Portland has long had some amazing food places but good cocktails have been hard to come by-- until now. Hunt and Alpine has creative and delicious cocktails, and bartenders who really want to make sure you have a drink you love. I have so many favorites on the menu I can't list them all (Gin Gin Mule, Late Night at the OOB and White Noise are recent faves), but it is also fun to ask them to make a custom drink just for you. These are real experts but they don't come across as snobby and it's very clear that they want the customer to have a good experience. The food is surprisingly good- when the Hunt & Alpine opened I assumed it was all about the cocktails, but the brown bread is delicious, the sandwiches are excellent (although hard to figure out how to eat) and the smoked trout deviled eggs are incredible. The popcorn is absurdly addictive. This is a great addition to the Old Port scene, and perfect for date night, hanging out with friends, and a solo night out at the bar.
