Located next to, and part of the Maine Historical Society (MHS) Museum and gift shop, is the Longfellow House. The Museum has changing attractions (the one I saw dealt with marriage dress for the past 100 - 150 years, many artifacts with stories tied to people in Maine. Dresses, shoes, hats, uniforms, accessories were displayed to full advantage. Charming gift shop, with a strong selection of books relating to all parts of Maine. The Longfellow House next door is part of the MHS and is open for tours (check in the gift shop for availability). There is also a research library open to the public (again, all to check hours).

If you're doing genealogical research (as we were) the Brown Library at the Maine Historical Society is a great resource. Over three days we spent about twelve hours there and came away with some excellent information. The researchers there were extermely knowledgable and helpful. We bought a family membership to the MHS which paid off for our multi-day visit.
Just make sure you schedule your research to align with the library's hours.
