“History-lovers delight”
Reviewed 5 October 2012

This small museum and its lovely historic gardens are a quiet delight. Not flashy, this isn't Disneyland, but a nice respite with plenty of historic material to enjoy, things to learn, and a great bookstore/gift shop for the history-minded. For the genealogy buff, this is a place for serious study; their very-professional staff can steer the serious scholar in the right direction. A fabulous resource and worth visiting their on-line exhibits at http://www.mainememory.net

“This is the place if you like history!”
Reviewed 21 March 2012

Located next to, and part of the Maine Historical Society (MHS) Museum and gift shop, is the Longfellow House. The Museum has changing attractions (the one I saw dealt with marriage dress for the past 100 - 150 years, many artifacts with stories tied to people in Maine. Dresses, shoes, hats, uniforms, accessories were displayed to full advantage. Charming gift shop, with a strong selection of books relating to all parts of Maine. The Longfellow House next door is part of the MHS and is open for tours (check in the gift shop for availability). There is also a research library open to the public (again, all to check hours).
