The entire display was devoted to Maine in the civil war, and it was very well done, with nice artifacts and good narrative.

When visiting Portland, I would recommend that you take the time to visit the Wadsworth-Longfellow house on Congress Street. The MHS has done an excellent job of maintaining the building and its furniture, and it's a really neat and interesting tour.

I've donated old photos of Peaks Island to the MHS, and they were kind enough to give me a few free tickets to see their Civil War exhibit, which I thought was very interesting. There were personal letters, logs, photos, and things I wouldn't have known what they were, except for the MHS's great research and notations. What I most love about the MHS are the buildings--the old architecture allowed to shine, while the new architecture works well with the old--such a nice place to have lunch in the back yard, after a visit to their exhibits. And I can't say enough good about how the MHS is a great resource for those doing genealogy work. The staff can be a bit stuffy, reserved, protective, but, that aside, I'm always happy to go there.

The exhibitions are interesting and very focused on important local issues. The recent Civil War exhibition was stunningly good. Theirs is really a campus, with the Longfellow House and the library/archives/ancestry research center. If you haven''t been, then you have missed one of Portland's and Maine's true jewels.

Maine Historical Society is located in the center of town on Congress Street. It is a compact place with plenty of room to wander and visit. I stopped in on Veterans Day 2013 to see the exhibit entitled "Maine in the Civil War." An enlightening and informative reveiw of the state's role in the Civil War - especially the 20th Maine at Gettyburg. The inclusion of specific individuals made it personal.
