Our family LOVED this location and would certainly stay here again. The staff is courteous, helpful, and take pride in their work. When I mistakenly typed in and paid for the wrong dates online, I called and the staff made the change without complaint and noted that a more spacious room on the 1st floor (7A) would be a better fit for our family of 4 - something that was not apparent from the description on the website. Our beds were very comfortable, even the inflatable queen mattress they provided us, the room temperature great, the black out curtains allowed us to sleep in and the bathroom was VERY well appointed. We were especially impressed by housekeeping. Breakfast was good and we liked that they provided trays for us to bring up to the room and had water, coffee and cookies available throughout the day. Given that a cab ride to the waterfront was only $6, it is well worth what you'll save to stay at this unique inn.

Room Tip: call the hotel before making your reservation to get a good description of available rooms. it seems...

I stayed here with my wife during our honeymoon for two nights. The staff was great, the breakfast was good, and its great they always have complimentary snacks and beverages available. There was plenty of free parking, some of it in the lot of the restaurant next door. The room was very small, but clean and adequate for a few nights. One small complaint about our room, which included an en suite bathroom, is lack of ventilation. With the air conditioner, the room is sealed quite well, and we noticed a bad odor when returning to the room after breakfast, which I think would be solved with a ventilation fan in the bathroom. Another small issue is the neighborhood. I live in a much larger city than Portland so I am not intimidated by the urban environment. Leaving the hotel to walk to the port area in the early evening, we walked by obvious substance addicts. One of the staff said the area was safe to walk after dark but I have to disagree. When we took a taxi ride back, we saw troubled individuals sleeping on the sidewalk, and on top of that, the neighborhood seems very quiet and dark and not very safe at all. So visitors should realize that while the port area is in walking distance of about 1 mile, you probably don't want to make that walk after dark. The overflow parking lot also appeared to be very dark and I was happy I was parking my rental there rather than my own car. The hotel itself is nice and a fine value. Free wifi.

Room Tip: Some rooms require walking with luggage up as many as three flights of stairs.

JK01- Thank you for taking the time to write a review about your stay. Sorry to hear about the poor ventilation in your room. We are currently in the process of upgrading the system that should be completed within the next few weeks. What makes Portland so unique is its very diversity with a variety of people that live here from artists to lawyers, college students to young families. Folks come form all over for our great restaurants and ocean views. Glad you found value in our rates, liked our amazing staff, and found plenty of free parking (that is included in the rate). On behalf of the Inn I wish all the best in the future.

We booked the Inn after reading positive reviews, reviewing its location on the map, and especially after noting its room prices in comparison with any other hotel or B & B in the downtown/Old Port vicinity.

Our stay was for ten days, and I'm not unhappy that we booked with them. However there are good points to be noted, and some other items that travelers should be cognizant of when considering a stay.

On the positive side, the prices are very good for the locale. The hotel staff are friendly, helpful, and informative. There are good places--not ornate--nearby to eat, and one is but a few blocks of some more upscale and tasty establishments. The environment is clean, there is adequate parking, the continental breakfast is filling--if not expansive--they keep free bottled water available at all times, and the afternoon cookies are a nice touch. If you like baseball, they literally are two blocks from Hadlock field and the Portland Sea Dogs. They are 3-4 blocks from Deering Park, which is a beautiful and safe area to see and enjoy.

On the flip side, know what it is that you're booking. It is an old building, not luxurious, and the rooms are small. There is no elevator, and the stairs are steep. To offset this, the staff will help you to take your luggage up the stairs if you ask. The inn itself is about 1.5 miles from the Old Port, and part of the route is uphill. We like to walk, so it worked for us, but others may find that this is too far away from what they want to visit. Also, be prepared to encounter a diverse population on the walk; however we never felt unsafe. The breakfast area is narrow--almost a corridor, and it literally can be elbow to elbow between 8-9 a.m.

Our major rubs were that our queen bed was not comfortable, and the sheets were ill fitting. Also, room service never could seem to get it quite right, and daily we had to ask for something as they would forget to replace the coffee or soap, provide clean mugs, or would fail to provide a bath mat. Once or twice in ten days, I get, but I can think of only two days where we did not have to ask for a basic item that should have been a rote function for housekeeping.

As stated, I'm not unhappy that we stayed there, and have no problem recommending the inn. If you go into it with your eyes open and aware of what you're booking, you will have an enjoyable stay. If you don't, I believe that you will be disappointed.

Room Tip: If you can afford it, go for the higher end rooms in terms of cost. They will provide a little extr...

I booked this hotel after reading so many positive reviews, and it was a fantastic place to stay! I love the vintage feel, the antique furnishings, and just everything about it. I can't say enough wonderful things about this beautiful old hotel or its wonderful staff. The building was absolutely charming and very, very clean. Staying here was like stepping back in time. The staff was friendly and so helpful in guiding us to the best places to eat and things to do. They actually upgraded our room to a larger one for the same price, but either way it was an absolute bargain for this nice of hotel. The bathroom had a vast array of soaps, lotions, and other personal care items, and I felt totally pampered. If I am ever in the Portland area again, I will definitely stay here.

We really enjoyed this hotel. It was about $100 cheaper than other highly rated options in Portland, making it a very good deal. You have to walk into town a bit from this location -- it's about a mile up the hill to the popular destinations. But a mile walk is healthy, and well worth the 100 bucks in savings. Our bed was comfortable and clean and the bathroom was very well stocked (possibly the best I have ever experienced) -- tons of towels and other products ( toothbrushes, mouthwash, etc.) -- including slippers! and robes for chillin' in the room. We didn't get to try the breakfast because we were late getting out in the morning and the coffee was empty at the exact moment we got to it, but I think that if we had had a couple of minutes, someone would have refilled it, and there was a single-cup brew system in the room. Park behind the hotel (take a left just past the front entrance), grab a free cookie in the lobby when you check-in, walk to the bodega next door for some Allagash to stock your in-room fridge, and walk into town for dinner (I do not recommend the Thai place on this street). The hotel feels old, and there was a slight smell right at the front of our room, but it did not permeate the space and was not distracting.

Room Tip: There are both en-suite and shared bathroom rooms, so choose whatever makes sense to you.

We spent the last night of our honeymoon trip at this inn. We loved it. Jeffrey was very helpful with giving us advice of things to do for our last night in town. They have a fridge of bottle water available along with cookies & several other beverage options FREE for guests throughout the day. They have a computer with good WIFI available for guests (free WIFI in whole Inn too). The rooms are all decorated in a French style. The only downside to our stay was the fact that there are many stairs & no elevator but we survived. Our bathroom was unattached to our room, didn't have a fan, & was very humid. We would stay at this Inn again. Nice staff & very affordable.

The first time we stayed here we had picked it more or less at random off the internet, just because it appeared to be convenient to the part of town we needed to be. We both fell in love with it and have stayed here multiple times since. On our most recent visit, we had told them it was an anniversary and when we got to our room, there was an anniversary card signed by the staff. There are no elevators and the stairs are steep, so if you have trouble with stairs go for a ground floor room. If you're a baseball fan, they are within walking distance of Hadlock Field. There are rooms for all budgets but be aware, the less expensive rooms are on the upper floors. There is no swimming pool but for some reason the system is not letting me remove my accidental rating below. I couldn't recommend them more highly.
