I love this hotel, I stay there evey time I fly from Portland for work, it's my home away from home, the staff is fantastic and helpful with all and any needs. And it has a fantastic location. Close to every thing you could need.

After reading the mixed reviews, I was apprehensive when the stairway to which we were directed (wish the staff person had mentioned the elevator) had leaves in it (which remained all four days of our stay). Other than this, and the musty (maybe old cigarette odor) in the room, we had a great stay. Comfortable beds, liked the power strip for recharging multiple phones and using computers, liked the fitness center with jacuzzi, found the room and bathroom clean enough. The breakfast buffet was much, much better than at other places where we have stayed--nice variety, enough food for everyone, very attentive person greeting guests and refilling items. Be sure to follow the directions into Portland which the hotel staff hand out; we didn't, and wound up paying $1 toll each time we entered and exited this area, until we discovered a much better way into and out of Portland. We also recommend the town of Westbrook, with at least two good restaurants (good food and value) and a nice gift shop with cards, jewelry and glass items from Maine artists.

Room Tip: we liked being on the second floor for the quiet it provided

The room was outdated, there was an ant problem, the whole wing smelt funky. If it wasnt for the fact that we had two young kids with us we would of packed up in the middle of the night. Staff did accommodate us by changing rooms when the ants were discovered .....we will never return.

We stayed the fireside with 2 adults 2 toddlers.
the first nonsmoking room reaked of cigarette but they did change our room. i was extremely disappointed by the breakfast or lack there of. i would have thought it would be comparable to a days inn with hard boiled eggs, waffle irons etc. but it was cereal and bread and more bread. they did have a huge bowl of yogurt. not very sanitary. and fruit salad which was good.
the outdoor pool was nice. inside pool was ok.
The last day housekeeping knocked on our door about 3 times starting about 2 hours before check out.
overall i would try another hotel and see what else i can find in the area

Not sure of the logic behind this, but in some corridors of the hotel, the smoking and non-smoking rooms alternate. There are "non-smoking" rooms with smoking allowed on both sides, and in the hallway. On the second night of our stay, our entire room filled with marijuana smoke (not ours!), which the front desk was not at all concerned about, telling us they have no authority to check out the surrounding rooms, as those guests also have rights. It was awful. My travel partner has severe allergies and asthma. The best the hotel offered was too e us to another "non-smoking" room.
Aside from the smoke, our room was cleaned without towels being replaced. When we called to get towels, it took over two hours for them to arrive.
Overall, it was pretty terrible. NOT recommended.

After a long grueling day of driving, I felt like I was coming home when I arrived at The Fireside Inn. Everything was perfect, the beds so comfortable with the down duvets, everything sparklingly clean, all the hotel employees glad to see us!
The corridor carpets are a bit worn but somehow make the hotel unpretentious and laid back. Our room had no sign of over wear though and all our needs were accommodated. I was pleased to note the care and whimsey that had gone into the fanned and folded towels!

When one of our cats was diagnosed with diabetes in January, our travel life was one of the many things that changed. Our cat sitter doesn't feel comfortable giving him insulin shots twice a day so he travels with us. Fortunately, he likes the car, likes people and likes motels. Fireside Inn is pet friendly and the conference we had to attend in Portland was held there so we chose to stay there. Upon arrival, the woman at the front desk was friendly but very unsure of how to handle the intricacies of checking pet toting cash paying guests. Guests paying cash are asked for an additional deposit of $75, something that had not been mentioned when the reservation was made. By happy coincidence, there is an ATM machine immediately to the left of the desk. After a lengthy struggle with the computer, we were given our keys. We had reserved what the Fireside Inn called an extended or expanded room because the insulin needs to be refrigerated. The first thing we looked for when we got to the room was the refrigerator and there was none to be found. The non-smoking room had a faint odor of stale tobacco that was apparent when we walked in. That dissipated as soon as the A/C was turned on. We called the desk about the absent refrigerator. The same pleasant but confused woman who had checked us in said she was surprised to learn there was no refrigerator. I was waiting for "Are you sure?" but thankfully, it wasn't said. She promised to have one sent in and it did arrive promptly. The caulk around the bathtub had mold on it. The cold water tap on the sink sounded like something from a haunted house movie when it was turned. The bathroom is very small. Beds were comfortable, there was a nice reading chair with an ottoman and a flat screen TV that had to be 36". The free wifi worked well. The next morning we decided to eat at Zackary's restaurant withing the Fireside Inn to get a hot breakfast rather than partake of the free continental one. At 7:15 AM, we were the only patrons at the restaurant. In spite of that, it took an unreasonably long time to get a cup of hot tea, which, when it finally arrived, was unaccompanied by cream or a utensil for stirring. After those details were attended to, the food order was taken and the food appeared in a reasonable amount of time. No offer of jelly accompanied the toast. Sig Other said the server had an attitude. That experience should have been sufficient to persuade us to eat breakfast elsewhere the next day but we returned to Zackary's the next morning. It was crowded but there were two servers. We sat down at about 7:50 AM and at 8:10 no one had taken our order. We agreed that we would wait five more minutes and in the interval, someone finally decided to pay attention to us. At checkout, it turned out that the pleasant but confused woman who checked us in had charged us for the pet deposit twice. That was returned promptly. We had to wait to get our $75 deposit returned while Housekeeping checked the room to make sure two middle aged people and a middle aged cat hadn't trashed it beyond recognition. As soon as Housekeeping responded, the money was returned. In summary, most of the people were polite and friendly. The room was adequate, not worth what we paid for it, though. The location is very convenient to the Maine Turnpike. It's easy to get into Portland on Brighton Avenue.

Room Tip: Our room faced south; the lights from Motel 6's parking lot shined right in the window.
