Bagheera and Wendameen provide the perfect vantage point to enjoy some of Maine's most beautiful sights and sounds - from the deck of a storied wooden schooner built in the early 20th century. For an afternoon, a day, or an overnight windjammer adventure, from Portland Harbor through the pristine waters of Casco Bay and beyond, refresh your spirit and excite your soul with an unforgettable sail reminiscent of a simpler time.

A beautiful way to explore Casco Bay-sailing on a 100 year old schooner. The crew were great sailors, and patiently let some of us lend a hand to hoist sails. Best 2 hours of my weeklong vacation.

Great fun and an excellent sail. We got a beautiful day with good wind so we were able to sail all the way out of the harbour out past Fort Gorges to the Headlight lighthouse (commissioned by George Washington). The historic schooner 'Bagheera' won major races in the 1920's; this was real sailing; not puttering around with a motor. We had all the sails up and I got to help hoist the mainsail. The crew were fun & knowledgeable. This was one of the highlights of our trip through Maine.

We took the two hour Casco bay sail on the Windemeen and had a lot of fun. It was a breezy over cast morning and there were just a few of us on the sail. We were able to converse with the crew and learn a lot of the local lore. It is exhilarating to be gliding through the water with the wind in your face and sails fluttering. Take some time and enjoy this adventure.

I hired there 70 ft schooner, Bagheera, for a party of 16 on my wife's 50th birthday. Fabulous sail, catered food and beverages.
You can sail with other visitors or hire it private.

This cruise should not be offered if there is no wind! If calm seas dictate that it has to be a motor cruise instead of a sail, a narrated cruise around some of the Casco Bay islands could be offered. I researched the ship after we got home. The Bagheera has a wonderful history. The ship's history and statistics could be talked about. The harbor is interesting...IF you know what you are looking at. We had taken a Portland Discovery Harbor Cruise earlier in the week, so we knew the history of the area as well as the many points of interest. All of this could have been narrated since the crew was not needed for any sailing duties. Our "sail" on the Bagheera consisted of s-l-o-w-l-y motoring out for an hour, turning around and s-l-o-w-l-y motoring back to the dock. That was it. The young crew seemed very nice, and the windlessness was certainly not their fault, but the Portland Schooner Company should consider an alternate plan for calm seas. We were disappointed and felt cheated.

I am sorry to hear you were disappointed and felt cheated by your experience aboard one of our schooners. It also sounds like your expectation for the cruise was that it would be narrated, and I am sorry that we gave you that impression. At Portland Schooner Co. we intentionally do not narrate our cruises, even it there is no wind, because there are other wonderful options in Portland to get a narrated cruise on Casco Bay, like Portland Discovery Tours as you mentioned. Since the experience of sailing aboard one our historic wooden schooners is so unique, we very deliberately strive to let that experience stand on its own. Irregardless of the weather, we hope we can give our guests the opportunity to unplug and enjoy the quietness of the sea and the ship while imagining a a bygone era of life aboard a traditional schooner. Once again, I'm sorry you were disappointed with your experience and hope you might give us another try at some point in the future.
