“Great Learning Experience for our 9 year old son”

Captain Jack Lobster Boat Adventure
Reviewed 24 October 2013

Nice mid October day, took the tour.Captain and his first mate very pleasant. Taught us, my wife, me and our son alot about lobster trapping, Identifying males and females, what's a legal catch, types of crabs caught in the traps too as well as other little sea creatures that come up in the traps.Saw a seal and some interesting birds like a Guilliote etc. Nice way to spend an hour and half or so. Our son loved it. And then have a nice lunch before or after at the restaurants nearby.

This is not a hands-on lobster boat. Go to Portland for that. Sit back enjoy the scenery and ask questions. The captain loves to tell local stories. (Ask about the bic lighter commercial).

my wife , 5 year old son and myself recently went on a lobster fishing trip with steve hale who calls himself captain jack. we came from singapore and in fact had booked a private charter at $150 per hour for that day via e mails. that day was 12 september 2013. having travelled half way across the world and trying to find the locality was not easy. there were no signs or markings on the pier and we were about 10 minutes late.when we finally got to the boat , we noticed that there was another couple and it was not a private charter. the second mate just said that it was not a private charter and this was the way it was. the captain was upset that we were late and basically told us off. his second mate was a nicer man and he did all the talking. steve hale said nothing and was totally rude , cold and terse. we were expecting to experience lobster fishing but all we did was sit and observe. we came all the way to at least "get our hands wet." this was not the case. so if one wants to experience real lobster fishing , this is not the boat for you and if you wanted a friendly welcoming boat , this is not the boat or captain. i am told that the real nice boats are all in portland port. the boat just left the dock and went to his lobster traps and that was all. no description of the view or scenery. a rip off and a bad example of real maine hospitality. he has a flag in his boat with a pirate on it. this captain is the real pirate !

We love lobster! My husband found Captain Jack online and booked couple days ahead. We live in Texas but always enjoy our trips to Maine. However, we had never been on a lobster boat. We thoroughly enjoyed our excursion. Both the Captain and First Mate were very hospitable and answered our many questions. They explained trapping and how the conservation efforts are helping the industry. The camaraderie between the two men made for great entertainment.

It wasn't part of our original plan, but a great diversion. We were fortunate that we were the only other non-crew members on the boat. We got to see the harbor, got some great pictures of the lighthouse and got to see the lobsters up close. Overall, a better experience for us than for the lobsters!
