“Great Not-so-Little Fleet”

Maine State Ferry Service

Give Maine credit. On a relatively short coast, it serves Mainers and tourists well in getting them to the beautiful islands that dot the shore. With frequent sailings, we are always amazed to see how the schedules are honored with on-time departures. Our only hesitation in holding back on a five-star rating is their hefty charge for bicycles - bewildering in a state that is always promoting green policy.

The ferry ride to Vinalhaven is a treat, but if you are taking a car over make sure you understand the process! There are very few reservations. To get one you need to start calling at 5:30 am 30 days in advance. If you don't have a reservation, you have to put your car in line....and wait your turn. This could take half a day, especially during the summer. This is from Rockland.
Getting the car off the island is even trickier. The process: you have to call, starting at 5:30 am the day before you want to leave. Keep dialing the number until you get in the cue,and wait for the attendant who will give you a line number for the next available ferry. If your line number is for a later .ferry than you want, ask for a standby number. Then show up in the standby line at least 30 minutes before the ferry departs. You may or may not be able to get on depending on the number of reservations or line numbers that don't show up! Confused? It is well worth your while to really understand this! Call the Maine State Ferry office for more clarification. The website doesn't tell the whole story.

Take the 1.5 hour trip to Vinalhaven and be sure to have your camera and be up on the top deck for the last half of the trip over. Vinalhaven has some good shops and eateries and good walks and views - try to find the "quarry". North Haven has all those too but the ferry trip is only spectacular rather than awesome. Haven't been to Matinicus - yet. Islesboro ferry is out of Lincolnville and is much shorter and less scenic but a good starter if you're not sure how you will handle a boat ride.

For $34.00 we got 2 round trip tickets from Rockland to Vinylhaven. The 1hr 15min ride was beautiful. Ferries run punctually and regularly in the summer. Try it and enjoy
