We took the 1 pm ferry to Vinalhaven and returned on the 4:30 one. That was plenty of time to walk around a bit and get a quick bite to eat but not enough time to walk to the nature preserve and eat. The ferry has bathrooms but no snack bar or vending. Seats inside are limited to be early if you think you might get cold or rained on. The flag is on the back in case you have trouble telling the front of the ferry. You should sit on one side going and the other side coming.

This ferry has been going back and forth for decades. Leaves on time and arrives on time. Lots of folks going to Vinalhaven with bikes/kayaks on top of their cars. This was a wonderful part of our vacation...make a reservation as the lines can get very long and then you have to wait 3 hrs. for the next ferry!

If you get the small ferry there is not enough seating. Trip to Vinalhaven is about 1 1/4 hours and too long for myself to stand with a bad leg.

Wanted to get my "boat ride fix"...and this was just the ticket. Took the 10:30 Ferry from Rockland to Vinalhaven. On this first ferry of the day there is a special round-trip "excursion fare"...pretty sure it was under $10 for a 1 1/2 hour trip to Vinalhaven.....45 ninutes to explore...then 90 minutes back.

It was a sunny Saturday; we saw lobstermen in action, lots of wildlife, a great shot of Owls Head Light and much, much more.

Put this on your "must do" list.

Bring a jacket...it can get cool on the water, even on an otherwise warm or hot day.

There are no concessions / food / or beverage on the boat. BYO.

Get a glimpse of Maine island life by taking the ferries. In particular, try the ferry to Vinalhaven from Rockland, which makes the 1 hour, 15 minute trip each way about six times a day. The trip is a tour itself, through other small islands off Rockland and in the Penobscot Bay. There is also a ferry from Rockland to North Haven, an island to the immediate north of Vinalhaven, which we did not visit.

The town of Vinalhaven is busy with shops and restaurants, mostly enjoyed by locals and second home people. The island purports to be one of the largest lobster harbors in the US. They are welcoming of day trippers, so don't hesitate to take the trip.
