“Interesting Kayak Tour in Camden Harbor”

Reviewed 29 August 2013

I took a 13 year old family member on the two hour kayak tour. I thought it was interesting but I was surprised that the guide did not know very much about the area or about the sea birds. I am a native of Camden so I was able to fill in some of the blanks for our guide. It was an interesting two hours and the views are great. I would go again if I wanted a chance to see the Camden from a kayak.

We went on a two hour "sea kayaking" guided tour with a group of other tourists. The whole thing was just lame. We had to stay very close together, the guide told us nothing of what we were seeing which, in any case, wasn't much, and generally spoke in a normal speaking voice on instructing us where to go so that people kept missing what he said and going astray. The trip itself was just dumb-you basically go out and back never getting to a spot you couldn't see from where you started. It may technically have been the sea but it wasn't much different from kayaking on the county man made lake at home except that you had to paddle slower. I can't say they promised anything so in that sense they deliver.

Maine Sport, which is the leading high-end sports store in this part of mid-coast Maine, runs an outstanding two day kayak trip in Muscongus Bay. My wife and I did the trip last week. The trip participants meet at the store (near Camden) on the morning of the first day, follow the trailer with the kayaks to Friendship, ME, and put in there. You paddle during both days, through the bay -- where you go and how far depends on the wind and weather and on the interests, skills, and choices of the participants, with suggestions and advice from the guide. Our guide, Steve, was an incredibly credentialed kayaker and canoeist, as well as a paramedic, and allround good guy. He provided both a wealth of information about the surroundings and training in kayaking skills ranging from stroke technique to navigation. He kept us challenged without being overbearing or pushing us beyond what felt good. We went about 9 miles the first day and 13 the second -- in each case about 8 hours, with a break for a very nice sandwich lunch. You overnight at Maine Sport's lodge on Gay Island. The lodge (which has a web site) is on an island reachable only by water and is a very comfortable facility (running water, electricity, and all that) originally built to house Maine Sport instructional courses. We enjoyed an excellent pasta dinner cooked by Steve and conversation with him about all manner of travel, kayaking lore, and navigation. Maine Sport provides kayak, paddles, PFD, spray skirt, as well as lunches each day, and dinner and breakfast for the overnight. Show up wearing what you will paddle in. You need only to bring sun block and pack (preferably in a watertight bag since it goes in the Kayak hold) clothes for time at the lodge, and whatever toiletries, medicine, etc you need. Bring something warm but don't overpack. (Incidentally, the lodge has a remarkable library of books on kayaking, so you dont' really need to bring reading material.)
We strongly recommend the trip for reasonably experienced beginner kayakers like us who want to try a somewhat more challenging trip than they would have felt comfortable doing alone (even leaving aside the logistics). ( Maine Sport does arrange longer trips (usually with tent camping) for more advanced kayakers and much shorter day trips for all skill levels, including kids and total beginners.) Maine Sport advertises the dates for trips, but we got the sense that they and the guides are reasonably flexible -- i.e., if the posted dates don't work for you, ask if there are any other possibilities.

Our family of four (mom, dad and kids age 6 and 8) booked a guided trip in double kayaks on a quiet day in early July. Our guide was simply fantastic; she knew a lot about the surroundings, the nature, the birds and – obviously – how to handle a kayak in a safe manner.

She was a very attentive and patient instructor as well and had – for instance – no problems whatsoever waiting for us to translate to our kid; being from Denmark, they haven't yet learned English at school.

The trip itself was about two hours, perfect with the little ones aboard, and consisted of a 'tour-de-harbor' as well as a trip around a small island just outside with a lighthouse on it. It was in fact quite beautiful, so bring a small camera (in a watertight bag, obviously).

In Camden Harbor, Maine Sports has a Kiosk Umbrella Stand, with information for 2 hr Tours in Double Sea Kayaks. Our problem was...we wanted to let our Granddarlin go Kayaking, but we were unfit to take her, and didn't want her by herself. Krissy, was our Heroine!!!! We asked if it was possible for her to be added to another party...or with the guide. Several days, with several missed opportunities occurred, until she found a off-duty instructor willing to go with our lass. Thank you, thank you...both.

I believe this trip to Maine was a priceless opportunity for our granddaughter to experience opportunities she could not find at home....and Kayaking could be a life-long passion, that just needed to be kick-started. I was willing to finance this opportunity, but not able to accompany, nor instruct her of this sport....and so thankful Krissy and staff at Maine Sport Outfitters gave us this amazing experience.

Who won't remember their first sea kayak trip, circling around their first lighthouse, viewed from the sea!
