These cows are so special that you too, could find yourself passionate about bovines! While visiting mid-coast Maine and the Camden / Rockport area, we visited this farm. We weren't able to go into the farm that day, but spoke at length with the folks who volunteer for the Heritage Trust, which protects & manages this farm. First of all, the farm is right on the shore of Penobscot Bay, so it is in a lovely area. These Belted Galloway cows originated in Scotland, hundreds of years ago. This herd is one of the most premier herds in the world, so you will see the best of the best. You can ask anyone in the area, and they can show you the way to see these "Belties" as they are called. We learned that these cows weigh up to 1800 pounds and a new-born calf can weigh about 90 pounds. They are huge. Although they are bred for meat, this herd is mostly used for breeding. The best part about the Belties, is that they remind you of an Oreo cooky, with the big white stripe around their middle. You can even buy a Beltie T-shirt in their little store! I promise that if you have never loved a cow before, you will once you've seen the Belties!
