“PEACE AND JOY”
Reviewed 25 July 2010

The Elm Cottage is quiet, welcoming, beautifully decorated, and surrounded by beautiful gardens. Two wonderfully comfortable rooms each with private bath and luxurious towels. Substantial breakfast. Vegetarian and vegan. Dogs and cats. Steps from water. Small restaurants and bookstore. And terrific marine museum as well as captain houses and library. Website offers lots of Maine information.

We were so happy to find that the Elm Cottage is as wonderful this year as it was last year. Please see my review from last year for more information. We hope to be back again.

A three night stay over 4th of July weekend. The place is tastefully decorated, very low doily quotient, with good sized rooms and a wonderful host. I'm not a vegan and am a bit of a foodie but I was more than impressed. Janet is a great host and can be quite accommodating.

Janet was an absolute dear! Besides her adorable b&b being right near the sea, the best thing about staying at Elm's Cottage was the food, of course, and Janet's company. The beds were amazingly soft..sweet dreams are sure to be had by anyone who visits!

As a surprise, I (vegetarian) took my fiancee (vegan) up to Elm Cottage on her birthday. What a treasure! We've tried our hand at vegetarian/vegan B&B's before, and never been that impressed. Janet was warm, friendly, and well-versed in our distinct food needs.

We showed up in the late evening, and were greeted immediately with a pot of tea and homemade pumpkin-spice bread, to be brought to our room or enjoyed in front of the already-going fire (of course we chose the fire!).

In the morning, we were treated to, quite literally, a feast. Tofu scramble, homemade scones and biscuits, homemade granola, fresh fruit, homemade soymilk, tea, orange juice, four different kinds of homemade fruit spreads, and two different kinds of butter. Sheesh!

Both in emails leading up to the night, and in person, Janet was very helpful with local suggestions, and very willing to play along with my surprise. Our dog was also not just tolerated but welcomed with open arms, which we very much appreciated.

And how can you not love a place featuring a one-eyed cat named Winky?

I will never forget the warm welcome we had at the Elm cottage. The room was unique, as well as the innkeeper herself and the superb breakfast she made for us. It was wonderful and we felt so comfortable!
I can only recommend this B&B to anyone who really wants to enjoy the richness of Maine. Apart from the good personal experience we had there, Searsport is also well located between Acadia National Park and other coastal towns such as Camden and Rockport. And if you don't want to follow the tourist track, the area has a lot of other things to offer - state parks with stunnig views of the sea, good lobster restaurants and the freshest air you have ever breathed! We will definitely come back.
